Our History
The Evergreen Presbyterian Church of San Jose had its beginnings in March 1983, when fourteen adults and six children met for worship at the home of Bill Stubbee and Rebecca Eastwood. By April 1983, the church began holding worship services on Sunday mornings at Evergreen Valley College. Church school activities were held once a month on Saturdays at the church office which, at that time, was an unoccupied dental clinic. Fellowship activities for the whole church were held monthly in homes or at community parks.
In September 1983, we began sharing an office with the Methodist Church, and we added a Church School to our Sunday morning activities. Our fellowship continued to grow, and the congregation was organized by the Presbytery of San Jose, Presbyterian Church, USA, on June 10, 1984. Fifty-three members were received that day, fourteen people were baptized and nine people were ordained as Elders. The Board of Deacons was elected in December 1984.
During 1985 and 1986, in addition to establishing our Session, EPC also developed various committees, education leaders, a choir, a women's circle, and a youth group. The church grew in numbers and in faithfulness to God.
Currently, we have approximately 15 members who meet online via Zoom for Sunday morning services and a weekly Wednesday night discussion and fellowship group. We're primarily a group of empty-nesters and retirees, and we're in that phase of life where we have the time and resources to focus on our community. We love doing mission projects together!
If you're looking for an intimate atmosphere where you can be known and integrated into a fellowship, we offer a great opportunity. We're a friendly bunch who would love to have you visit and check us out! All are welcome!
