CareerDiva.net (Feb. 2011-May 2011)
As an intern for CareerDiva.net, I helped founder Eve Tahmincioglu run her career news blog. The blog receives around 20,000 visitors each month. My tasks included locating and adding five career news stories to the news ticker on the blog daily, editing Eve’s posts daily, writing my own posts, and helping Eve to research for her articles with national publications.
In addition to my daily updates of the news ticker, I also wrote three blog posts, a blog tidbit, and a book review.
Blog posts are approximately 600 words and on a specific career news topic. They require some research on the topic and interviews with experts when appropriate. My three topics were college students going to grad school instead of entering the job market, women-dominated fields being considered “soft,” and the potential career problems with excess foursquare use.
A blog tidbit is a shorter piece of about 300 words written quickly as an update to the website. My blog tidbit was about whether Google’s search results for “female jobs” objectified women.
Book reviews are a summary and evaluation of a career-related book. I read and reviewed a novel called High Octane Women: How Superachievers Can Avoid Burnout.
Frederick County Gazette Newspaper (Sept. 2006-May 2007)
The Gazette was a community newspaper distributed free to all county residents. Unfortunately, it is no longer published. As an intern, I wrote around one news article each week in addition to assisting the copy editor with her work. My articles covered all aspects of local news, including school plays, community events, and notable community members.
For each of my stories, I researched for sources and then conducted interviews with those people, either in person or over the phone. Most of the articles were assigned to me by the copy editor but I was able to write some stories of my own choosing. In conjunction with my senior project at my high school, a few of my pieces were about environmental issues in Frederick County. By the end of my internship, I had eight of my articles printed on the front page of the paper.
In addition to writing articles, I helped the copy editor with the recurring aspects of the paper, including birth announcements, obituaries, and notices for community events. I also read over press releases and re-wrote them in a usable format for the paper.
