I am an Associate Professor in the Philosophy Department at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia (right outside of Vancouver).
These days, my research primarily lies at the intersection of moral psychology and criminal jurisprudence with a particular focus on moral responsibility and criminal culpability. I explore these topics as they relate both to foundational philosophical questions and to practical doctrinal issues and their implications for our practices of blame and punishment. My work is guided by the methodological principle that the fields of moral psychology and criminal jurisprudence can mutually inform each other.
My previous research focused primarily on normativity and practical reason, and I still dabble in that area. I may return to those issues in the near future with an eye to questions about the authority of law.
Outside of philosophy, I enjoy playing tennis, hiking, and spending time with my family (above photo is us snorkelling in Cancun, Mexico). I used to coach both my son's and daughter's soccer teams (until my son developed to an age and level beyond my competence and my daughter quite soccer to take up ringette).
