第二節分析《喧囂與忿怒》(The Sound and the Fury) 的離心形空間結構。
Abstract
This paper examines the patterning of voices in three of William Faulkner’s novels. The first section describes the prominence of “polyphony” in Faulkner’s works. The second section analyses the centrifugal spatial construction of The Sound and the Fury within which the patterning of voices is such that all are all fleeing from a central point: Caddy’s immorality which signifies a lapse in tradition. The third section analyses the linear time construction of the mother’s journey in As I Lay Dying. There are two parallel narrative lines: Jewel’s “silent doing” and Darl’s “speaking” which together help drive the plot of the novel. The fourth section analyses the patterning of voices in Absalom, Absalom! on both temporal and spatial axes, with a centripetal movement towards the core of events. The two narrators strive to break into the other’s language space and in turn appropriate the story. The entire novel unfolds non-chronologically. The fifth section concludes by re-examining the patterns of voices in Faulkner’s three novels and their relationship to the concepts of space, time and truth.
