Abstract
The United States is generally regarded as the most powerful nation in the world today. Its educational system is also generally regarded as the model for most of the nations to improve their schools. In fact, people of the world have been impressed by the philosophy, aims, nature, curriculum, teaching methods, facilities, and particularly development of American education.
However, the American society has been changing rapidly since 1960s. It is a fact that the American education has lagged behind the present condition in life in the United States. Under the circumstances, American education faced the following major problems in 1970s:
1. The problem of discipline in the school.
2. The racial misunderstanding in the school.
3. The low morale of school teachers.
4. The decline of the higher education.
5. The lack of enthusiastic support from the public.
This article describes, discusses, and evaluates the relationship between the American social change and its impact on the American education in recent years.
