Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to introduce to Chinese readers the recent development in the study of historical demography in European countries such as France and England and in the United States of America. Emphases are made on the research works done by Institut National d’Etudes Démographiques in France, Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure in England, and various centers of population studies in the United States.

One of the sections of the paper is meant to discuss how the method of historical demography can be applied to the study of Chinese historical demography. A systematic investigation of more than one thousand genealogies and an interdisciplinary approach call for the attention of these who are interested in the study of Chinese historical demography.
