植物が光合成を行うために必要な色素「葉緑素a」と「葉緑素b」がなぜ共存しているのか、長年の謎が解明されました。
本研究は、日本大学の金恩哲助教(元:自然科学研究機構・基礎生物学研究所)、自然科学研究機構・基礎生物学研究所の皆川純教授、同・分子科学研究所/東京大学の石崎章仁教授、韓国エネルギー工科大学のKim Heetae准教授らの国際共同研究チームによる成果です。光化学系II(Photosystem II)における葉緑素aとbの共存が、光エネルギーを効率的かつ安全に利用するためであることを発見しました。ネットワーク解析と量子力学計算を組み合わせ、光エネルギーの流れをシミュレーションすることで、自然な葉緑素比がエネルギーの過剰流入を防ぐ安全弁として働くことを明らかにしました。
