If you want a professional-grade, noise-isolating in-ear monitor with precision-matched balanced armature drivers for critical listening and studio work, choose Etymotic ER4SR; if you need a high-fidelity, open-back over-ear headphone with massive planar magnetic bass and an immersive soundstage for home audiophile sessions, choose Audeze LCD-2.
These two products occupy opposite ends of the audio spectrum, designed for fundamentally different environments and listening goals. The choice isn't about which is "better" in a vacuum, but rather which one fits your specific use case, particularly when considering specialized activities like best on ear headphones for swimming (where neither truly excels, but the ER4SR's isolation is superior for general water resistance contexts compared to open-back designs) or simply choosing the right tool for the job. The ER4SR is a surgical instrument for accuracy, while the LCD-2 is a theatrical stage for immersion. One demands silence and focus; the other demands space and air.
• Etymotic ER4SR: Offers industry-leading 35-42 dB noise isolation and precision-matched drivers within 1 dB, making it ideal for professionals who need absolute sonic transparency; however, its in-ear design and wired-only nature limit mobility and make it unsuitable for open-air listening or casual wear.
• Audeze LCD-2: Delivers incredible bass response and near-zero distortion through 100mm planar magnetic drivers with a wide frequency range up to 50 kHz, perfect for critical home listening where soundstage matters; yet, its open-back design offers zero noise isolation, leaking sound both ways and rendering it useless in noisy or shared spaces.
• Who each pick is for: The ER4SR is for audio engineers, musicians, and detail-oriented listeners who prioritize accuracy and isolation above all else. The LCD-2 is for dedicated audiophiles with a quiet home environment who value depth, texture, and realism over portability.
The Etymotic ER4SR is built for people who treat listening as a form of work or a highly disciplined hobby. At its core, this earphone is an engineering marvel designed to measure, improve, and protect hearing while delivering the most accurate reproduction possible. The defining feature here is the pair of high-performance balanced armature drivers that are precision matched to within 1 dB across frequencies from 100Hz to 10kHz. This level of channel matching is not just a marketing buzzword; it ensures that the left and right channels are virtually identical, eliminating any phantom imaging or imbalance that can distract from the music. If you are an audio engineer mixing tracks, a musician monitoring their performance, or an audiologist testing hearing, this consistency is non-negotiable.

Beyond the drivers, the physical design of the ER4SR speaks to its purpose. The body is sleek, made from anodized, laser-etched aluminum, which feels substantial and durable in the hand. It includes a braided, reinforced 5ft detachable MMCX cable that resists microphonic noise—those annoying rubbing sounds that cheap cables make when you move your head. This attention to build quality suggests a product meant to last for years in a professional setting. The inclusion of a comprehensive assortment of eartips, including dual flange silicone pairs in sizes S through XL, triple flange pairs, and foam pairs, allows users to dial in a seal that is critical for the claimed 35-42 dB of noise isolation. That isolation is the product's superpower. By physically blocking out ambient noise, the ER4SR forces your brain to focus entirely on the recording, revealing details that might otherwise be masked by background chatter or traffic.
However, this specialization comes with significant trade-offs. The in-ear design means you are wearing something deep inside your ear canal. While comfortable for many due to the various tip options, it is not a "wear it all day" solution for everyone. Furthermore, the impedance of 45 ohms and sensitivity of 98 dB SPL mean that while they don't require a massive amplifier, they do demand a decent source to reach their full potential, especially given the maximum output of 122 dB. They are strictly wired devices with a detachable 3.5mm gold-plated stereo plug, offering no wireless freedom. If you are looking for the best low latency sports earbuds for swimming, the ER4SR is not the answer; its design is not waterproofed for submersion, and the tight seal required for isolation makes it uncomfortable during vigorous movement where sweat is a concern. But for stationary, critical listening in a controlled environment, nothing else comes close to this level of fidelity.
In stark contrast to the closed, isolating nature of the ER4SR, the Audeze LCD-2 Classic is an open-back over-ear headphone designed to create a vast, airy soundscape. This reissue of the vintage original model brings back the wonderful warm tonality of the classic LCD-2 without the Fazors, resulting in a slightly warmer sound signature than the regular LCD-2 version. The heart of this experience lies in its 100mm planar magnetic drivers. These diaphragms are thinner than a human hair and four times larger than typical dynamic drivers found in most headphones. This massive surface area allows for a uniform driving force across the entire diaphragm, resulting in near-zero distortion and incredibly fast response times. The result is a sound that is described as much more realistic, with a bass response that is both powerful and controlled.
The construction of the LCD-2 reflects its premium positioning. It features exclusive glass-infused nylon rings that are rugged and contribute to the acoustic properties of the driver. The headband is a new steel suspension design that distributes weight evenly, paired with leather-free memory foam earpads that offer comfort during long listening sessions. Hand-crafted in California, every unit is rigorously tested and calibrated before leaving the facility, ensuring that the sound you hear is exactly what was intended by the engineers. The frequency response spans from 10 Hz to 50 kHz, far exceeding the standard human hearing range, which suggests a level of resolution and clarity that captures the nuances of high-resolution recordings.
The primary limitation of the LCD-2 is its open-back design. Because the earcups are not sealed, sound escapes into the room, and ambient noise enters the ear. This means you cannot use these headphones in a busy coffee shop, on a plane, or in an office with colleagues talking nearby. You need a quiet sanctuary to enjoy them. Similarly, if you were searching for a noise cancelling kids headset for swimming, this would be a catastrophic failure; the open design would let water in immediately and provide zero isolation from the world. The LCD-2 is strictly a home component. It requires a 6.35 mm jack (often requiring an adapter for smaller sources) and a capable amplifier to drive the 70 ohm impedance effectively. However, in the right environment, it delivers a sense of space and immersion that closed-back in-ear monitors simply cannot replicate. It is for the listener who wants to disappear into the music, surrounded by the acoustic performance of the room itself.
• Best for noise isolation: Etymotic ER4SR. With 35-42 dB of passive isolation, it blocks out the world completely, whereas the LCD-2 leaks sound in both directions.
• Best for soundstage and immersion: Audeze LCD-2. The open-back design creates a wide, natural image that places instruments in a 3D space, unlike the confined, in-ear presentation of the ER4SR.
• Best for studio reference and accuracy: Etymotic ER4SR. The 1 dB channel matching and balanced armature technology provide the flat, uncolored response needed for professional audio work.
• Best for bass impact and texture: Audeze LCD-2. The 100mm planar magnetic drivers deliver a deeper, more textured low-end that feels physical and realistic.
• Best for portability and durability: Etymotic ER4SR. The aluminum body and reinforced braided cable make it rugged and compact, while the LCD-2 is fragile and bulky.
• Best for home theater and critical listening: Audeze LCD-2. Its ability to resolve fine details and maintain separation over long periods makes it ideal for extended home sessions.
• Best for battery life: Neither, as both are wired. However, the ER4SR works with simpler mobile dongles, while the LCD-2 often requires dedicated desktop amplification.
• Best for specialized use cases: Etymotic ER4SR is better suited for situations requiring a secure fit and isolation, though neither is truly designed for best on ear headphones for swimming or aquatic activities.
If I had to choose one to own for my personal collection, I would buy the Audeze LCD-2. There is something magical about the way planar magnetic drivers handle complex orchestral passages and deep bass lines that I simply cannot get from the ER4SR. While the ER4SR is undeniably the king of accuracy and isolation, the LCD-2 offers an emotional connection to the music that feels more alive. The warmth of the tonality and the sheer scale of the soundstage make it a joy to listen to for hours in a quiet room. The ER4SR is a tool I respect, but the LCD-2 is an experience I crave. That said, if your life revolves around working in noisy environments or you need a reference tool for mixing, the ER4SR remains the only logical choice. But for pure musical enjoyment, the LCD-2 wins.
Neither product is designed for swimming. The Etymotic ER4SR offers excellent noise isolation but is not waterproof, and the Audeze LCD-2 is an open-back design that would be destroyed by water and provides no isolation. For best low latency sports earbuds for swimming, you should look for products specifically rated IPX7 or higher.
Yes, the 70 ohm impedance and large 100mm drivers generally benefit significantly from a dedicated amplifier to drive them properly and unlock their full dynamic range, whereas the Etymotic ER4SR at 45 ohms is easier to power with standard portable gear.
The Etymotic ER4SR provides 35-42 dB of passive noise isolation, effectively cutting out almost all external sound, while the Audeze LCD-2 has zero isolation because it is an open-back design, allowing ambient noise to pass freely.
The Etymotic ER4SR comes with a 2-year warranty as listed in the customer package details, while the specific warranty duration for the Audeze LCD-2 is not explicitly detailed in the provided data sheet, though Audeze is known for robust support.
