His international journey commenced when he relocated from his birthplace of Santiago, Chile, to South Africa and France. He pursued his high school education at Lycée Stanislas Paris in France and later attended The London School of Economics and Political Science for college. Subsequently, Etienne moved to New York and became a vital member of the founding team of International Business Times (IBT), a digital media company established in 2006. Operating from its headquarters in New York, IBT quickly emerged as a prominent provider of business news coverage across various countries, pioneering an all-digital format. Recognizing its potential, IBT expanded its portfolio and rebranded as IBT Media, introducing additional brands such as Medical Daily, Latin Times, and Player. One, and Fashion Times.

Etienne's significant accomplishments include leading the successful acquisition of Newsweek Magazine by IBT in 2013, following his transition to Newsweek's offices in Downtown New York. With a keen focus on development and growth, Etienne, alongside the IBT team, invested significantly in Newsweek's resurgence. They transformed the publication from an e-magazine into a comprehensive news website, seamlessly restoring the print edition. The compelling editorial content of Newsweek garnered substantial attention and propelled the magazine to profitability by the end of 2014. Moreover, under Etienne's guidance, IBT experienced remarkable growth by leveraging proprietary technologies that provided a competitive advantage in digital publishing. Recruiting top-tier journalists and the company's commitment to excellence led to the attainment of prestigious accolades, including 6 SABEWs, 1 Izzy, and 3 The Drum Online Media Awards.
