Using STEAM education results in students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. These are the innovators, educators, leaders, and learners of the 21st century! This comprehensive article will help you understand the keys to a meaningful STEAM effort.

As with most approaches in education, we need to ensure that our teachers receive high-quality professional development before implementation. There are plenty of options available, including STEAM conferences and courses. Whichever you choose, just be sure that teachers have the ability to learn more about how this approach works and how to use it in their classrooms.

STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking.

Global skill shortages in STEAM-related fields are redefining educational priorities. Schools are starting STEAM-based learning programmes to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the 21st century. STEAM learning will not only produce tomorrow's designers and engineers; it will develop innovative mindsets and the ability to problem-solve, ensuring that our students become creators of technology, not just passive consumers.

Chantelle Rich shares her experiences with STEAM education. Chantelle offers tips and advice for others starting their journey, particularly around budgets, and how to bring the A into STEAM learning.

The PocketLab

Pocketlab is an easy-to-use data collection tool aimed at aiding STEAM education. It can integrate with your device to provide sensory data on a range of physical and environmental forces, from motion to temperature.

Arts: We offer an award-winning music education program beginning in transitional kindergarten. Students in 5th-6th grade can learn up to 6 instruments and we provide the instruments. Visual and Performing Arts are integrated into the school day to foster creativity in students.

Promotes activities that strengthen STEM education for underserved communities, broaden their participation in the workforce, and increase knowledge about promoting inclusion. (EES was formerly the Division of Human Resource Development.)

Strengthens STEM education at two- and four-year colleges and universities by improving curricula, instruction, assessment, laboratories, infrastructure, collaborations and the diversity of students and faculty.

This project will merge environmental science, geospatial technology, digital media and education through an ambitious collaboration between faculty across disciplines. Laura Cisneros, assistant extension professor of natural resources and the environment (NRE) and director of the UConn Natural Resources Conservation Academy (NRCA), is the PI on this project. Other researchers involved in the project are Todd Campbell, department head and professor of curriculum and instruction in the Neag School of Education; Cary Chadwick, extension educator with the UConn Center for Land Use Education and Research (CLEAR); Heather Elliott-Famularo, department head and professor of digital media and design; Anna Lindemann assistant professor of digital media and design; David Dickson, extension educator and interim director of CLEAR; and Nicole Freidenfelds, extension educator and NRCA program coordinator.

The team will teach the pods how to engage in educational storytelling, using geospatial technology and digital media tools as vessels to convey their messages. Participants will be taught how to use a mapping application, called ArcGIS Storymaps, to create interactive online narratives using maps and digital media. They will also learn basic digital media and design skills, such as video and animation, to share engaging stories about their environmental projects.

STEAM is an educational approach that incorporates the arts into the more-familiar STEM model, which includes science, technology, engineering and mathematics. STEAM programs can include any of the visual or performing arts, such as dance, design, painting, photography and writing.

The focus has been on STEM fields and education for them since the late 20th century, when the ongoing shortage of technology workers began. Since that time, government agencies in many countries around the world have invested heavily in STEM education and its promotion. The emphasis on fostering STEM skills has inescapably led to decreased emphasis on other subjects in the arts and humanities, with the result that funding for them has dwindled and students have fewer arts-related options.

Reintegrating art and design into education has been demonstrated to increase the happiness and well-being of students. From a business and perspective, the major payoffs include better problem-solving skills and increased creativity and innovation. The integration of arts into STEM education and fields may also help encourage more participation by women in what have been male-dominated areas.

With the rapid rate of technological development and the increasing pace of change in society, the need for relevant approaches to teaching and learning has never been more critical. Indeed, champions of innovation and education, such as Sir Ken Robinson, Jack Ma, Salman Khan, Sheryl Sandberg, Simon Sinek and Elon Musk all recognise that the current system of education is not serving children well enough and the world is changing so quickly that society urgently needs to educate differently.

Primarily housed in our new state-of-the-art and environmentally friendly Innovation Centre facility, but integrated across our whole school with our respected IEB and Cambridge curriculums, ESTEAM aims to put Somerset College at the forefront of South African and international educational innovation.

The U.S. Department of Education invited STEM education entities to make bold commitment(s) to advance STEM education in America. We encourage you to consider the following parameters in developing your commitment:

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are the center of attention in most US public schools today. The focus on STEM fields was initiated to increase global competitiveness and the project does have its merits. However, it has left the arts languishing far off in the periphery. This is quite unfortunate, as art education is known to improve academic performance. The STEAM, not just STEM Education Infographic presents interesting facts and stats pointing out the significance of arts education.

STEAM is an acronym for the fields of study in the categories of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. The initiative began to include arts and design in STEM fields education. The founder of this initiative is Georgette Yakman, who in addition to raising the idea of adding the arts to the STEM acronym, claims to have found a formal way to link the subjects together and correspond them to the global socioeconomic world.

Chen, W., Tang, X. and Mou, T. (2019), "Course design and teaching practice in STEAM education at distance via an interactive e-learning platform: A case study", Asian Association of Open Universities Journal, Vol. 14 No. 2, pp. 122-133. -07-2019-0027

In recent years, many Chinese scholars (e.g. Zheng, 2016; Zhou et al., 2017; Chen and Wang, 2019) have been exploring ways to integrate STEAM education with different disciplines. Exploratory courses related to information technology courses and creative courses of science and technology, such as Scratch graphical programming, open source hardware, 3D printing, APP Inventor, woodwork and paper circuit, etc. are particularly prominent in the development of STEAM education. In terms of education policy, curriculum development and teaching evaluation, the development of STEAM education in the USA provides many references for China. However, due to different national conditions, it is not only expensive to make use of the existing course resources of STEAM education in the USA for secondary development, but also difficult to link up the knowledge system of course content. At present, the development of STEAM related courses and specific classroom teaching in China cannot directly apply the experience of the USA, and are still in the process of continuous exploration. ff782bc1db
