Directions - Class #1

(This lesson (class #1) to be completed by Ms. Scrimgeour during library time!)

1. Watch and listen to Potato Pants by Laurie Keller.

2. Talk to someone about how Potato and Eggplant had misunderstandings.

  • What kinds of feelings did Potato and Eggplant have in this story?

  • How did they react to each other in the story?

  • How could they have reacted differently?

  • Can you think of a time when you reacted in a big way?

  • What could you have done differently?

  • Why is it important to consider other people's feelings?

3. We are going to make potatoes! We will start with decorating pants to go with your potato. Color in and cut out THIS pants template.

Directions - Class #2


  1. Time to create our potatoes! Prepare your favorite papier maché solution!

  2. Crumple up 2-3 pieces of newspaper into a potato shape. Use tape to help hold its shape.

  3. Rip small pieces of brown paper bag and dip them in the paste to cover your potato.

  4. Your potato will need to dry (24-48 hours).

  1. Your potato is now ready to decorate! Add eyes, mouths, arms, legs, and more!

  • What can your potato do in tough situations?

  • If your potato gets upset by someone's actions, what will your potato do?

  1. Share your potato with someone and tell them about how your potato will react in tough situations.
