Language acquisition and proficiency
¡Bienvenidos a la clase de español, nivel 1! This is a proficiency-based class. Proficiency means internalizing the language, as opposed to simply memorizing vocabulary and grammar points. Gaining proficiency levels means being able to communicate messages more effectively. We are more focused on acquiring the language (unconsciously going through the process of understanding and communicating through social interaction) as opposed to learning the language (consciously learning language structure and vocabulary). Our goal is to end Spanish 1 at the Novice-Mid level.
BENEFITS OF LEARNING A SECOND LANGUAGE
About me
I am originally from the Bay Area, California but spent a great portion of my adult life living in Brooklyn, New York. I began teaching in 2008 at a bilingual transitional high school for Latino newcomers in New York City. I absolutely loved working with my students as they had the opportunity to learn Global History in their native language, Spanish, within my classroom. I taught a combination of Humanities (Global History and native language arts Spanish) and Spanish Native Language Arts to ninth and tenth graders at the same school until I moved to Houston, TX nine years later. Upon relocating to Houston, I worked as a 2nd grade dual language (Spanish) teacher for all subjects at a dual language charter school. I love language learning and language education and believe children, as well as adults, are capable of language learning if placed in the proper context.
