Welcome to the Energy System Optimization Laboratory at Hongik University. Our research aims to address the challenges of a rapidly evolving energy landscape by designing and evaluating modern electricity markets, optimizing power system operations, and planning for future grid needs.
Market Design and Analysis
Our laboratory is at the forefront of research into developing efficient and robust market mechanisms, exploring topics such as pricing, coordination, strategic behavior, and novel market products. By modeling and analyzing market structures, we seek to enhance market efficiency while integrating emerging energy technologies and renewable resources.
Optimal Operation of Power Systems
Our research on optimal power system operation involves real-time dispatch and scheduling, congestion management, and system reliability. We investigate strategies to ensure the grid remains resilient, cost-effective, and sustainable under various market and policy frameworks.
Power System Planning
We focus on long-term power system planning. This involves assessing generation and transmission expansion, evaluating infrastructure investments, and integrating new decarbonization technologies-like energy storage-into the grid. We employ advanced modeling techniques to guide data-driven decision-making and create resilient, future-proof energy systems.
Integrated Energy Systems and Sector Coupling
Our research involves integrated energy systems, which aim to optimize the interactions between electricity, heating, cooling, gas, and transportation sectors. Sector coupling enables the efficient use of energy resources by linking traditionally separate energy systems, promoting the integration of renewable energy and decarbonization technologies.
