FAQ

Pre Registration FAQ

General

Q: Who should attend this course?

A: You should attend this course if:

  • You are a faculty member who wants to overhaul an existing course on embedded system or design a new course covering emerging trends in IoT, wearable gadgets etc.
  • You are a practicing Computer or IT or Electronics or Instrumentation or Communication or Electrical or Mechanical or Civil or Biomedical engineer or a medical practitioner or a research scientist who deals with sensor based smart gadgets in day to day life. And are interested in gaining holistic knowledge of such state-of-the-art IoT systems, so that you can get best results from such systems.
  • You are an academic researcher - faculty or student - who is focusing on certain aspects of a smart IoT system but lacks knowledge on other aspects which could be crucial for your research as well. You will get overview of building blocks of such IoT systems.
  • You hear a lot about IoT, Wearables, Sensors, Embedded systems, Cloud, Big Data etc and curious to know how such things put together make a complete smart system.

Q: What would be the level of complexity of the course content?

A: The purpose of this course is to give overview of state-of-the-art IoT systems. This includes gaining understanding of building blocks, their role in the overall system, different technologies used, interfaces etc. Therefore complexity of the content would be of beginner level.

Q: Is there any prerequisite for this course?

A: You will get the best out of this course if you have:

  1. Basic knowledge of any programming language (C, C++ or Python preferable)
  2. Basic knowledge of digital electronics & microprocessors
  3. Engineering aptitude and curiosity
  4. Willingness to learn

Q: Will I get certificate of participation?

A: Yes. You will receive certificate on successful completion of the course.

Q: I have attended same course last year. Will the course content remain same or something extra will be added to it? As one can go for this course again or not?

A: Thank you for giving candid feedback last time. It has helped us in significantly improving the course flow, content and structure.

We've made significant progress from last year to this year. You will see it reflecting in the course content and flow. What I can say is that there would be some addition and some removal from the past year content. However some of the basic fundamentals will remain same. Though we have not yet started designing the lab exercises, you may expect significant changes there.

There are also few changes in logistics, based on last year's experience. One such change is that all the QIP candidates (non-local) will be accommodated in VH (IITK's guest house). And the classes will take place in a classroom on VH premises.

Q: I've done NPTEL - Introduction to IOT course by Dr Sudip Mishra from IIT Kharagpur. I want to understand if this course ESD4IOT will add my knowledge beyond NPTEL course?

A: We would spend decent amount of time on (embedded) design of smart sensor node which is an important constituent of an IoT system. We would also touch data analytics and networking / communication as well. You may visit this URL to know what we covered last time -

https://sites.google.com/view/esd4iot/archive/june17/resources

As per our understanding, our course would complement most of the existing courses on IoT.

Q: Would this course help me in shaping my career in IoT, as an entrepreneur or an industry professional?

A: After going through this course, the participants would gain enough insights to conceive and build IoT systems on their own. It would certainly be useful in industry. One of the instructor - Amit - is from industry and running an IoT based startup. He will share insights which he has gained through extensive industrial research and technology management in the field of Embedded Systems, Sensors, Wearable IoT, System on Chip, VLSI etc.

The instructors have also covered part of this workshop in a half day IEEE invited tutorial on wearable electronics, in Bangalore. There we got very encouraging response. You may find the material here - https://www.oblu.io/pages/ieee-wt-tutorial

We also plan to include an invited talk on utility of patent information and entrepreneurship by an IP expert from SIDBI Innovation & Incubation Centre.
