Indigenous Impacts
In the years following the IGY, the Arctic's strategic value increased significantly, contributing to a surge in military expansion into the region. This expansion included the construction of extensive radar networks spanning northern Canada. Indigenous communities were not consulted about the use of their land, and many communities were displaced through land appropriation, restricted access to traditional lands, and disruption of hunting and travel routes (Lorincz, 2024).
