Unstable Connections

This multimedia instillation shows multiple examples of relationships that either fail or were never meant to be in the first place. As a collaboration between multiple artists, a lot of different pieces of work come together in this environment to tell a bigger story of heartbreak and tragedy.
This project was a large combined effort that really came together in the end with the help multiple artists: Jamie Hagar, Sean Mansfield, and Aisha Chowdry. From the work that was already created in the semester, we found a commonality between the works that Jamie and I had and decided to run with the idea of heartbreaks and connections between others. This theme while also based around the fragility that they had in their primary piece in the instillation, introduced the idea of this fragility displaying itself in the form of eggs.
From this, multiple different paths were taken. I wanted to play with the idea of showing love through food, and I thought it would be a little funny if it showed that through the eyes of pasta. The point-of-view I created playfully related with both the food and relationships in Jamie's short film. Sean took a more abstract approach to the idea and utilized found footage intermixed with him smashing eggs. Finally there was an interactive component that tied things together; Jamie took the initiative to record the process of handling different types of eggs and had the idea of a personality quiz of sorts. With this, people can see some examples of the different types of relationships represented by eggs.
During setup of the instillation, we needed some extra help. We did not have a soundscape for the space and Aisha quickly jumped in to help us with that. From there, we set up six projectors around the room, two projection screens, two pairs of speakers, headphones, and a computer along with room decor to complete the visual setup of the night. Overall, it was a large success and many people came to engage with the work. While the connections needed to be explained a little more thoroughly between each piece of media, the overall effect of the instillation was achieved.
A short film following the POV of a box of pasta. Through the understanding the short-term memory of a noodle, this takes a distant voyeuristic approach at viewing a relationship that was doomed to fail.

What are the similarities between eggs and relationships? They are both very fragile. This experimental video plays with the passage of time and the literal destruction of life and eggs.

Sometimes it might be easier to take a pause and redo a moment in a relationship. However, somethings are made to be appreciated in the moment and not focus as much on the past.

This soundscape accompanied the other pieces of media around the room. Made to provoke thought with the long droning sounds and more calming violin.
