Stay Away, Deer!

This was the first game I made using the Stencyl software. This was made for my Designed Play course where we had the creative freedom to do whatever we wanted. When we were first given the project, we were told to brainstorm some ideas; I came up with a hide-and-seek type game and a 2D fighting game based around hitting your opponent with folding chairs before I settled on this idea. I figured that since we only had 2 weeks to do everything for this game (the art, the coding, sound design, etc.) that this would be the best use of my time while making a coherent project with a new software.Â
In the early stages of development, I wanted to base this more around the idea like asteroids/tower defense: you throw salt at deer to make sure they stay away from your garden. That was the original idea but was scrapped when I couldn't figure out projectile motion fast enough. I decided to still incorporate the idea into the game though by giving the player the ability to use salt as a defense in levels 2 and 3. I think in this way, the limitation of this mechanic helped me develop the story around why the deer are coming to attack better and gave me a purpose for a level-based game.
