I kept a “Waste Diary” for 7 days and I found that I threw away a lot of trash related to clothes. For example, clothes I couldn't wear anymore, packing materials for clothes, tags attached to clothes, and so on. This is because I got a lucky bag of clothes and organized my closet in a week.
I threw away a “color scheme reversible blouson”. This was an outerwear item that a company called “Honeys” had sold about 4 ~ 5 years ago.The front is made of a water-repellent material like a windbreaker, and the back is made of a fluffy material called boa.The light green and white colors make the item easy to wear without being flashy. This item was one of the items in a lucky bag that I bought when I was a junior high school student. Since then, I have worn it a lot to keep myself warm when I took a high school entrance exam and I went shopping with my friends. I decided to throw it away because I was getting too many outerwear items, but I felt lonely because I had loved it.
Having a lot of outerwear seems to indicate my lifestyle. For example, I am sensitive to cold and I buy clothes without deep thinking.

What was the life of the “color scheme reversible blouson” that I threw away?
Firstly, how was this item made?
This item is made of polyester. It was manufactured at the “Honeys” factory in Myanmar. The reason why the factory was located in Myanmar is mentioned in the article1. “The main production is in China, but the rising cost of workers is a problem. Therefore, the company entered Myanmar as a new strategy to produce clothes that are “cheap and easy to buy” for young people”.

Secondly, how did this item come to me?
This item, made by Myanmar workers with sewing, came to Japan by ship. It was then transported directly to “Honeys” stores. The reason why items can be quickly placed in stores is that Honeys has a “product supply system that shortens lead times and keeps trends”. This system is made possible by their original SPA system, which is “a business model that cuts out unnecessary costs and time”.(article2) The item arrived at the store in this way and it was sold as outerwear in a 5,000 yen lucky bag. By the way, there were a total of 5 items in that lucky bag : 1 outerwear, 3 tops, and 1 bottom. Many of the clothes in it, other than the outerwear thrown away this time, were also thrown away at the same time when I entered the university of Tsukuba.

Thirdly, how was it used and thrown away by me?
I wore the “color scheme reversible blouson” for about 4 years. However, I have decided to take away this item because I couldn’t put away many clothes in my closet and my clothing sizes and tastes have changed as I have grown. However, I felt it was wasteful to throw it away because it was still wearable, so I decided to take it to a recycle shop named “WonderREX Reuse Entertainment Shop” in Tsukuba. Although, this shop did not buy it. When I was wondering what to do, my parents told me about “collecting used cloth" in japanese, “古布回収”. In the area where I live with my family (actually, I have lived in Tsukuba with my family for 19 years), there is a “collecting used cloth” on the first and third Tuesday of every month.(article3) Used cloth collected in Tsukuba will be sorted and pressed by recycling companies in Japan, after that, transported to foreign countries (mainly Southeast Asia) to be sold as used clothing or reused as industrial rags or cushioning materials.(article4) Other used clothes are “recycled as half-wool, compressed into sheets, and then used as soundproofing material for automobiles, building materials”.(article5)

I used to think that if clothes were not sold at reuse shops, they were directly disposed of as combustible garbage. However, I learned that after clothes left me, they are worn by other people or used as normal fabrics. But this does not mean that I can throw away a lot of clothes because not all used clothes are reused, in fact. Therefore, it is important for us to buy clothes that I can use for as long as possible, and continue wearing them for as long as necessary. In addition, even if we decide to throw away our clothes, it is important to examine them carefully if there is any way to make effective use of them.
So what are the ways in which clothes can be reused? There are personal ways and public ways. Personal ways are giving them to our family and friends, or remaking them for cushions or bags. Because this way is relatively easy, I think there is less guilt about throwing them away. Public ways are disposing of them in your own local government, or donating them to an organization that uses clothes effectively. This way is a little hard, but the clothes that we no longer use can be reused in places where there is more demand for them. Thus, unnecessary garbage and overproduction of clothes can be reduced by using a variety of ways to reuse them.
From now on, I would like to think carefully before buying clothes so that I throw away fewer clothes, and I would consider how to reuse them in order to minimize environmental impact when I throw them away.
