Caroline Forbes is a best friend to Elena Gilbert and Bonnie Bennett. She's popular and a cheerleader and no surprise to anyone, becomes MISS MYSTIC FALLS of the town. She's great at organizing events and is known to be loyal to those that she cares about. Despite all of that, she has a tendency to be insecure, neurotic and an overachiever. This only intensified when she became a vampire in her junior year of high school. She was turned by Katherine Pierce during a hospital stay. Now she's more controlling than before, but she doesn't let it hold her back. 

Being a vampire is tough for Caroline in the beginning, she's afraid of hurting people. It takes her awhile to learn to control herself, but with the help of Stefan Salvatore, she manages. She doesn't like Stefan's diet, but is careful about how she feeds herself once she does gain control. 

Her father didn't want to accept her being a vampire, going so far as to try to get her to not be one anymore in cruel ways. And when her mother found out, it was hard for her to deal with as well. At least her father wasn't around, but her mother, well she wiped it from her memory and pretended as if things were normal. Elizabeth Forbes knew, however and learned to love her daughter as she is, even though her being a vampire was the last thing she wanted.

However, losing her mom to cancer was one of the hardest things that Caroline had to go through and as a consequence, she shut off her humanity for a time to forget about it all. That was, until it all came crashing back and she had to accept her new reality. She's learned to deal with a lot and it has toughened her up and just made her more kind over time. 

Caroline became a news reporter and segment producer of KQBC studios, Channel 3 news of Mystic Falls, following a dream she'd had in high school. She does that for quite a few years before she retires. She now runs the Salvatore boarding school that her daughters attend.
