Fa Mulan grew up in a small Chinese village with her mother, father and grandmother. They have many various animals on the family farm , but she does have a horse she favors named Khan and a family pet dog named Little Brother. Mulan is raised to be a proper young lady and is sent to the matchmaker in the hopes of getting a suitable match. The match making process goes haywire and Mulan runs off to her family home in disgrace. Her father, however, uplifts her with his wise words of wisdom. Sometimes, she thinks there is more than a marriageable match in the cards for her.

When men from the army march on their village with demands for a man in every family to participate in the war, Mulan is horrified because her father is not in the best health and he has already fought for the army. In a brave move, Mulan leaves that night after cutting her hair and poses as a soldier. She takes up the name of Ping and hopes for the best, this is the only way her father will remained unharmed so that she will not lose him, nor the rest of her family.

Somehow Mulan pulls it off. It takes her time to get into the groove of training. There is even a point when Captain Shang nearly kicks her out. Mulan proves him wrong by climbing the tall poll. The group are called to the front and Mulan and the group travel many days to go after the Huns. When they do come across them, they manage to get the army down by Mulan being daring once more and taking the last canon to cause an avalanche. At what cost though. Mulan's identity is revealed after she sustains an injury and instead of killing her, Shang leaves her to go home on her own.

However, seeing that the Huns are alive after all, Mulan goes to warn Shang that they did not succeed after all. Once getting to the palace, Mulan ends up in an intense battle with Shan Yu himself. She doesn't wish to, but she is forced to kill him for the sake of the country. His men retreat. The emperor scolds her at first, but he thanks her with an honorable medalian and a hug, that surprises her more than anything. Instead of celebrating, Mulan returns home and offers the medalian to her father, who is more relieved than anything else that she is home. 

Shang ends up visiting the family home and joins them with dinner to give her the news that the emperor has offered her the position of general. Mulan decides she will take the offer and thus she has found herself and realized what it was that she actually is supposed to be doing to help people.

• Shang and Mulan end up together, but I am always open to other ships.

• Mushu ends up becoming a great assesst to Mulan and he sticks around to help in other familial duties as well.
