If you want a single, high-precision hydraulic strut to keep your Can-Am Defender's windshield securely open while you work on the machine, choose EPI Windshield Support Gas; if you need a massive assortment of 177 fasteners and clips to secure the bodywork on a Yamaha dirt bike, choose Generic 177PCS. These two items serve entirely different mechanical purposes, and comparing them directly is like asking whether to buy a wrench or a set of screws. However, for teen drivers who are learning vehicle maintenance, understanding exactly which tool fits their specific project is the difference between a successful repair and buying the wrong part twice. One is a heavy-duty suspension component for utility vehicles, and the other is a comprehensive hardware kit for sport bikes.
• EPI Windshield Support Gas: Its biggest strength is restoring smooth, reliable operation to the tip-out windshield on Can-Am Defender models with exact OE specifications; its trade-off is that it is sold individually, meaning you will likely need to purchase two units to replace both sides effectively. This pick is for anyone maintaining an HD8, HD9, or HD10 Defender who needs to safely prop up the cab glass.
• Generic 177PCS: Its biggest strength is the sheer volume and variety of aluminum bolts, clips, and spires designed specifically for Yamaha WR and YZ series motorcycles; its trade-off is that it is not a structural lifting device but rather a collection of small fasteners for body panels. This pick is for riders rebuilding fairings or fixing loose panels on their Yamaha dirt bikes.
The EPI Windshield Support Gas is engineered as a direct replacement for factory-installed struts on a very specific lineup of Can-Am off-road utility vehicles. If you own a Can-Am Defender HD8 from 2016 through 2021, or any HD9, HD10, or HD10 Max model through 2025, this unit is designed to fit those mounting points perfectly. The primary function here is safety and convenience. When you are working in the engine bay or loading gear into the cab, you need that windshield to stay open without sagging back down on you. This gas shock provides the necessary pressure to hold the glass securely in place, allowing you to have both hands free for repairs or organization.
The design relies on precise engineering to match the original equipment manufacturer (OE) requirements. It replaces part number 705800030, ensuring that the geometry remains consistent with the vehicle's factory setup.
However, there is a crucial detail in the product information that every buyer must consider. The item is sold individually. If you have already replaced one side but the other has failed, or if you are doing a full overhaul, you will need to order a second unit to ensure balanced support. This is not a "buy one, get two" scenario. The unit weighs approximately one pound, making it a manageable component to handle, but its value lies in the fact that it restores the mechanical integrity of the windshield system without requiring custom fabrication. It is a straightforward, cost-effective alternative to the often expensive OEM parts found at dealerships.

In stark contrast to the hydraulic nature of the EPI strut, the Generic 177PCS kit is a collection of fasteners intended for motorcycle enthusiasts working on Yamaha machines. This kit is not designed to lift anything heavy or provide structural support against gravity in the way a gas shock does. Instead, it is a solution for securing fairings, bumpers, and bodywork panels to the frame. If you ride a Yamaha YZ450FX, WR450F, WR250R, WR250X, or TTR125, this kit offers a comprehensive set of hardware to reassemble or repair the exterior plastics.
The material composition is a key feature for this product. The bolts and clips are made from high-quality aluminum, which is chosen for its balance of strength and weight. An electroplated finish is applied to the hardware, serving a dual purpose: it adds aesthetic appeal by keeping the parts looking vibrant and clean, and it provides protection against fading over time. This is important for dirt bike riders who spend hours riding through mud, dust, and moisture, as rusted or degraded fasteners can lead to loose panels that flap around and cause damage. The kit includes replacement spire/speed clips and bolts, which are essential for non-destructive installation and flexible removal. This means you can take the bodywork off for cleaning or repairs and put it back together without stripping threads or breaking plastic tabs.
The sheer quantity of pieces—177 individual components—makes this kit a practical choice for anyone undertaking a major fairing rebuild or simply needing to replace a handful of lost or stripped screws. The design allows these parts to be combined easily, ensuring a tight fit for various panels. However, the user must exercise caution regarding compatibility. The kit is tailored for specific Yamaha models listed in the description. Before purchasing, it is vital to compare the photos and part numbers carefully to ensure the bolt sizes and clip types match the existing hardware on the bike. This kit is ideal for the DIY rider who wants to restore the look and security of their bike's bodywork without hunting for individual parts at a dealership.
• Best for lifting heavy glass panels → EPI Windshield Support Gas, which uses hydraulic pressure to hold a windshield open.
• Best for securing plastic bodywork → Generic 177PCS, which provides the screws and clips needed to attach fairings.
• Vehicle compatibility → EPI is strictly for Can-Am Defender HD8/HD9/HD10 series; Generic is strictly for Yamaha YZ/WR/TTR series.
• Installation complexity → EPI requires removing old struts and installing new ones, typically needing two units for balance; Generic involves swapping out multiple small fasteners across the bike.
• Material durability focus → EPI focuses on internal seal integrity and stroke consistency; Generic focuses on aluminum corrosion resistance and finish longevity.
• Unit count necessity → EPI is sold singly but works best in pairs; Generic comes pre-bundled with 177 pieces to cover multiple potential failures.
• Primary use case → EPI keeps the cab accessible and safe during maintenance; Generic keeps the bike looking stock and panels from vibrating loose.
• Teen driver relevance → A teen driving a Can-Am Defender needs the EPI to fix a broken windshield; a teen riding a Yamaha needs the Generic to fix a cracked or missing fairing screw.
I would buy the EPI Windshield Support Gas if my goal was to fix a broken windshield on a Can-Am Defender, and I would buy the Generic 177PCS if I were rebuilding the fairings on a Yamaha dirt bike. For a teen driver, the decision comes down entirely to the vehicle they operate. If they are behind the wheel of a utility vehicle like the Can-Am Defender, the EPI is the only logical choice because it solves a critical safety issue where the windshield won't stay up. Conversely, if they are on a trail riding a Yamaha, the EPI is useless noise, and the Generic kit is the only thing that will help them secure their bike's bodywork. I recommend the EPI Windshield Support Gas for its precision engineering and ability to restore factory functionality, provided you remember to buy two units for a complete job.
No, the Generic 177PCS kit contains fasteners specifically sized for Yamaha motorcycle fairings and cannot be used as a replacement for the hydraulic windshield struts required on a Can-Am Defender.
While the product is sold individually, the manufacturer recommends replacing both struts simultaneously to ensure balanced support and smooth operation for the windshield.
The fasteners in the Generic 177PCS kit are constructed from high-quality aluminum with an electroplated finish to resist fading and corrosion.
Yes, the EPI Windshield Support Gas is compatible with Can-Am Defender HD8 models from 2016-2021, as well as later HD9 and HD10 variants up to 2025.
