EPAIS will collaboratively initiate a research roadmap of open challenges and visions concerning future process-aware information systems (PAIS) and how we engineer and operate such systems.
PAIS are a special class of software that facilitate modeling, executing, monitoring, and optimizing business processes. Unlike general-purpose software, they possess an explicit understanding of the organizational workflows (e.g., expressed in the form of business process models, such as BPMN or object-centric), ensuring activities are performed in the correct sequence, by the right people, and according to defined rules.
EPAIS aims to address the full engineering and operations life-cycle of PAIS (as sketched below) and not only focus on individual techniques in isolation.

NB: "épais", a common French adjective for "thick", pronounced as "eh-peh" is widespread in everyday French, for instance, one might describe a book with many pages as "un livre épais" or a dense forest as "une forêt épaisse ;-)
