In 2016, it separated its conventional power generation and energy trading operations into a new company, Uniper, while retaining retail, distribution and nuclear operations.[7] E.ON sold its stake in Uniper through a stock market listing[8] and sold the remaining stock to the Finnish utility Fortum.

In 2020, E.ON UK announced that it would be migrating customers over to a new subsidiary brand called E.ON Next. E.ON Next also has two million migrated customers from commercial energy firm npower Business Solutions and Powershop after acquiring both companies.[14]

In May 2014, the UK energy sector regulator Ofgem ordered the company to pay 330,000 of its customers a total of 12 million due to poor sales practices the company engaged in between June 2010 and December 2013. At the time it was the largest penalty levied against a UK energy supplier.[26]

E.ON is one of the major public utility companies in Europe and the world's largest investor-owned energy service provider. As result of mergers, E.ON inherited the subsidiaries of VEBA, VIAG and Ruhrgas in Central and Eastern Europe. E.ON is present in most of Scandinavia.

E.ON was a major wind energy player across multiple countries. In October 2019, the renewable energy division EC&R was sold to competitor RWE. The sale included EC&R's assets in the UK, Sweden, Germany, Poland and the US.[42] Notably E.ON UK, owned 30% of the London Array project, which is a 630 MW wind generation farm in the Thames estuary.[43] Another notable wind farm is Roscoe, which was the largest in the world at the time of completion, and for a number of years afterwards.[44]

E.ON Digital Technology (previously E.ON Business Services until January 2019, E.ON IT and is:energy) is the IT service provider of the energy company E.ON. It bundles business services for finance and HR as well as IT under a single roof and employs around 3,800 people. These are located at four legal entities in Germany (EBS GmbH, EBS Berlin GmbH, EBS Hanover GmbH and EBS Regensburg GmbH); plus legal entities in ten further countries (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden and United Kingdom).[46]

E.ON UK sponsored the FA Cup for four years, from 2006 to the end of the 2009/10 football season.[47] The four-year deal which included the FA Women's Cup and the FA Youth Cup was worth around 40 million. E.ON is the official energy partner of The Football League and sponsors a collection of home programmes on Channel Five in the UK. E.ON has previously sponsored ITV Weather, the Ipswich Town football club and the Rugby Cup.

Nottingham Forest has announced that E.ON will become the club's official training kit partner. The announcement comes as the Reds return to pre-season training on 3 July 2023. The energy company have partnered with the club since 2021 and have now struck a new deal which will see their logo appear on all men's and women's first-team training wear.[49]

E.ON UK is a British energy company and one of the largest suppliers of energy in the UK, following its acquisition of Npower.[3][4] It is a subsidiary of E.ON of Germany and one of the Big Six energy suppliers. It was founded in 1989 as Powergen, and was listed on the London Stock Exchange and was once a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. It has been a subsidiary of E.ON since 1 July 2002.[5]

E.ON was formerly a vertically integrated utility company with interests in electrical generation, electricity distribution in the Midlands region, and in the electricity and gas supply markets. It took a pioneering role in the development of large scale renewables including the construction and operation of the UK's first offshore wind farm at Blyth in Northumberland.[6] It became one of the first in the world, and the first major UK energy company, to significantly[7] alter its structure by spinning off its fossil generation business so it could focus on energy supply, grid development and renewables.

Just after the failed SSE-Npower merger of retail assets in late 2018,[26] it was reported that the Big Six energy suppliers would still consolidate to the Big Five, as Npower would be acquired by default by E.on UK, due to the already-planned asset swap of the respective German parents Innogy and E.ON.[27] Following the merger of npower, E.ON UK became the largest overall provider of electricity and gas in the UK; remaining the second largest provider of electricity and gas to domestic customers.[3]

As part of their efforts to support vulnerable customers, E.ON Next launched their new Winter Affordability Support Scheme for winter 2023/2024 on 1 October 2023. The scheme could help low income households and customers with medical dependencies save up to 50% on the cost of their energy bills and even write off existing debt.[34]

They also offer a range of energy solutions, installed by E.ON UK, to help customers reduce their energy use and carbon footprint. These include electric vehicle home chargers, energy efficient boilers, solar panel installations, and heat pumps.

Powergen/E.ON sponsored the ITV National Weather forecasts from its launch on 13 February 1989 until 31 December 2007, a period of 18 years. They were known for their memorable sponsorship sequences from a set introduced on 12 April 1993 which featured weather themes circulating around (or parts of) the Powergen logo, and from 20 November 1996, the WeatherGens, a "mascot" of Powergen representing different types of weather. After several different sets of idents throughout the 2000s, Powergen eventually became E.ON in 2007 and the sponsorship was changed to accommodate the name change. The sponsorship ended on 31 December 2007 and from 4 July 2016 to 8 July 2018, ITV National Weather was sponsored by rival energy company SSE on all ITV plc stations and UTV.

The energy recovery plant will be built, owned and operated by E.ON Power Plants Belgium, a 100% subsidiary of E.ON SE. The start of commercial operation of the plant is scheduled for the second half of 2025. The supply of electricity to Imerys is secured by a long-term partnership agreement between the companies.

Both Imerys and E.ON attach great importance to sustainability. The power generated by the energy recovery plant reduces the need for conventional power generation, providing a saving of more than 25,000 tons of CO2 per year (based on the average CO2 emission of power generation in Flanders). The project will also contribute to improved air quality locally by reducing sulfur and nitrogen emissions thanks to an exhaust gas treatment unit (e.g. DeNOx and DeSOx systems).

CHICAGO, April 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The world's largest investor-owned utility is now bringing customized asset management, maintenance, and repair services to North American renewable energy projects. E.ON, one of the largest U.S. renewable energy generators, announced that it is forming E.ON Energy Services to capture a growing and under-serviced market. The new business will leverage E.ON's global experience, turning that experience to its U.S. customer's advantage by driving more efficient and profitable renewable energy project performance.

Uniper stresses that it will play a key role in ensuring supply security in Europe as it transitions to a low-carbon future, with its portfolio of large-scale power generation and the management of global and regional energy supply chains: "The growth of intermittent renewable generation increases the need for flexible power plants that can meet fluctuating demand at short notice; our generation portfolio is well suited to this task."

At the end of 2015, E.ON's major domestic rival RWE announced its plans to spin off a company focused on renewables and grids to raise capital, while retaining fossil and nuclear energy generation. In contrast to E.ON, RWE is selling parts of its business while retaining overall control. RWE spins off exactly the business fields E.ON will keep: grids, renewable energy and retail. For more details, read the following

E.ON's split comes at a time of rapid changes in Germany's energy landscape. The transition to green energy sources has dealt a heavy blow to the country's largest utilities' old business models. Renewables, mostly wind and solar, now produce roughly a third of electricity. But the largest power companies, such as RWE and E.ON - with their focus on fossil and nuclear power - have been slow to adapt.
