Department of Hygiene
Graduate School of Medicine, Hokkaido University
Our group aims to elucidate the health effects of various environmental factors at the population level with multi-disciplinary approaches. At the Department of Hygiene, we apply epidemiological approaches that combine clinical data of diseases and physiochemical/social environmental data from various sources. In addition, we will quantitatively evaluate and predict the health impact of the environment in the past, present, and future using the environment-human health risk function obtained from epidemiological studies. We also focus on global environmental issues, such as climate change, transboundary air pollution, smoke from vegetation fires, and the local environment, which tremendously impact our health.

Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine
This study examines how PM2.5 and ozone (O3) affect the relationship between temperature and mortality in 20 major Japanese cities.
The findings indicate that high O3 levels may amplify heat-related mortality risks, particularly for cardiovascular diseases and among vulnerable groups, while no consistent modification effect was observed for PM2.5. The results suggest a need for public health strategies to address the combined impacts of temperature and air pollution.
