What inspires the bases of power? To give some context, the bases of power are the big three supporters of hegemony, or “the privileging of one set of ideologies over another, creating a kind of social control or form of domination that reinforces and maintains the dominant ideologies" (Hendry). These three elements include material sources, psycho-social aspects, and organizational aspects.
This includes money, information, and technical expertise that maintain power structures (Hendry).
Coming from the "sense of identity for group members who are bound together by common interests and values and the symbols that represent them" (Hendry).
These aspects are “derived from institutional networks or organized collections of knowledge, resources and procedures" (Hedry"
Material power usually includes access to resources through the “superior” organization or ideology. This gives individuals who are a part of the "in group" access to tech experts, money, or other resources they may need.
Psycho-social power comes from social groups. Many times, social groups hold a lot of the same ideas or values as each other and they usually are enforced or encouraged with ideographs. Examples of this could be as far ranging as Catholicism and Taylor Swift fans, which have common ritual practices in a group, a group identity, etc.
This can include the power over things like laws, rules, and educational requirements. For instance, one commonly debated rule or law is the right to bodily autonomy and abortion. Other examples are the standards of education requirements (what schools are allowed to and not allowed to teach about, like LGBTQ+ identity). Or organizational power could refer to control of what media is allowed to be published or read.
