Enrico Paolini was born in Fano, Italy, in 1977. He received the Dr. Ing. degree (summa cum laude) in Telecommunications Engineering in 2003 and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering in 2007, both from the University of Bologna, Italy.

While working toward the Ph.D. degree, he was a Visiting Research Scholar with the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, Honolulu, HI, USA. From 2007 to 2010, he held a postdoctoral position with the University of Bologna. Currently, he is an Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical, Electronic, and Information Engineering "Guglielmo Marconi" (DEI), University of Bologna. In 2018 he received the Italian national scientific qualification for the position of full professor. His research interests are in the area of communication and information theory and include error correcting codes, massive multiple access protocols, statistical signal processing and tracking algorithms, joint sensing and communications, group testing. In the field of error correcting codes, has been involved since 2004 in several activities with the European Space Agency (ESA). He was a Visiting Scientist at the Institute of Communications and Navigation of the German Aerospace Center in 2012 and 2014 under DLR-DAAD fellowships.

Dr. Paolini is a Senior Member of the IEEE, chair of the IEEE ITSoc Italy Section Chapter, and vice chair of the IEEE ComSoc Radio Communications Committee. He served as Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Communications (2015-2020) and for the IEEE Communications Letters (2012-2015). He served as TPC co-chair of the Communication Theory Symposium at IEEE GLOBECOM 2019 and IEEE GLOBECOM 2022. He also served on the Organizing Committee (as general co-chair) of the 2020 IEEE Information Theory Workshop (ITW), 2018 European School of Information Theory (ESIT), VTC 2019 Fall Workshop on Small Data Networks (SmallDataNets), ICC'14, ICC'15, and ICC'16 Workshop on Massive Uncoordinated Access Protocols (MASSAP), and (as treasurer) of the 2011 IEEE International Conference on Ultra-Wideband (ICUWB).
