The purpose of this assignment is to have a communication tool for all of us to use when dealing with microaggressions.
One of the most important skills that engineers can learn is to properly communicate with their team, employer, customer, and community. In this class, we will be communicating via Zoom, email, Canvas discussions, reading reflections, homework, lab work, and possibly texts or phone calls. We will be communicating with each other, peer mentors, Whatcom staff, and community members. As we expand our social and professional lives, it is important to realize that we might not always say the right thing to every person that we meet. We might offend someone or hear someone say something offensive to another and we or they might not realize it. And that's okay. But what isn't okay is to not to try to inform all present parties that something may have offended one or all within earshot. The tool that we will be employing in this class is a technique called R.A.V.E.N which deals with microaggressions.
"Psychologist Derald Wing Sue defines microaggressions as "brief, everyday exchanges that send denigrating messages to certain individuals because of their group membership". The persons making the comments may be otherwise well-intentioned and unaware of the potential impact of their words." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microaggression )
We are in this class to learn and what better way to learn that to empower ourselves to make the world a better place for all.
For this assignment, please read the following article. Next week we will read another scholarly article that deals with microaggressions at colleges and universities. By having the R.A.V.E.N tool, we will be able to not only discuss this article but to learn from one another.

The purpose of this assignment is to have use the RAVEN microaggressions technique to read and comment on an article.
Using the article How to Respond to Microaggressions when they Occur, read the following article:
McGee 2018 Black Genius Asian Fail.pdf
While you are reading the article, when you read an example of a microaggression look at the RAVEN technique and think about how you would use this new technique.
For this assignment ~
Share in the class discussion if you are committed to using the RAVEN technique if you hear a microaggression in this class (Zoom meetings and small group interactions)
Share in the class discussion if you are okay with someone using the RAVEN technique if they think you might have committed a microaggression in this class.
