Mr. Ahmad’s students were excited because they got permission from the Headmaster to spend a day out for which they had been planning for a sufficient period of time. The best part of the picnic was that they would be traveling by school bus.
When Mr. Ahmad reached the Model Farm with his class, the boys were surprised to a great extent to see a vast area of an agricultural farm spread in front of them with the golden wheat standing upright and it was something that seemed to be against their expectation and imagination.
On reaching the Model Farm, the boys astonishingly observed a machine that was working in the wheat field named as “Combine”.
Thresher is a very helpful machine when comes the question of farming as it separates the grain from the chaff. It comprises of two ends, from one end of the machine comes out the pure golden grains of wheat whereas from the other end chaff flies out.
The whole process of ploughing, seeding and harvesting all depends on machines on the model farm. These machines are not only effective in work but save a lot of time and require less manpower too.
Mr. Hassan threw light on the importance of machine on the farm by saying that one man working with this machine can do as much work as one hundred men working without it. It means that the output which is produced by one man with a machine is equivalent to the output of hindered men who do the same amount of work but without machine.
According to the estimation provided by Mr. Hassan to Mr. Ahmad and his class, the average produce from an ordinary farm is 15 to 20 quintals of wheat per hectare.
Mr. Hassan proudly compares his model farm production with any ordinary farm by saying that the model farm produces as much as 60 to 70 quintals of wheat per hectare.
One can find a huge difference in the produce of ordinary farm and model farm due to a number of efficient steps such as the use of modern machinery, sowing machine, best quality seeds, use of chemical fertilizers, insecticides and availability of sufficient water. That is why model farm resourcefully produces three to four times as much wheat per hectare as an ordinary farm does.
The last stage of the process is that they spray insecticides on their crops to kill germs and other insects in order to protect their crops for any harmful effects.
The model farm is a land with a combination of grains, vegetables and fruits. On the model farm one can easily find and relish wheat, maize, cotton, sugar-cane and gram along with a number of vegetables. A vast orchard is occupied with the green trees laden with fresh mangoes and oranges.
On reaching the vegetable farm, the sight that surprised the boys was the fresh appearance of even those vegetables which were considered out of season by the general public in the market.

Q.1) Passage for dictation:
To show what machines mean to the farmer, experts have calculated that with these modem tools, it takes half an hour to sow a quantity of grain that used to require ten hours. The mowing machine does more in an hour than the scythe would do in seven. Among other modern equipment for the farm may be mentioned the electric milker, the cooler, the cream separator, the feed grinder, the manure spreader and a score of others. Many of them are operated by a petrol engine or a tractor at a great saving of time and labour.
Answer:
Note: It’s just for dictation, no excercise to be done.
Answer:
They get so much produce per hectare on the model farm due to a number of effective steps taken there:
The first and the foremost element is the use of machines at the model farm for each and every process. For instance, tractors are used to plough the land deeper to prepare it for sowing much faster.
Secondly, the sowing machine sows the seed very fast and in this way no seed goes waste.
Thirdly, the selection of seed is of vital importance. The seed selected at the model farm is one of the best qualities. They never compromise on seed quality for best production.
Next, wisely they use chemical fertilizers on the model farm in order to enrich the soil for better yield.
Then, definitely availability of ample water is a must for agriculture. For that purpose, a lot of canal water is there to irrigate the fields at model farm along with the private tube – wells which are responsible for continuous supply of water throughout the year to the model farm.
Finally, insecticides are sprayed on the crops to kill germs and other harmful insects.

Answer:
As the time flies at a very fast pace, one can find a huge difference in the way of living as well as methods adopted by mankind to perform various jobs. Modern methods of farming are much better than the old ones due to certain valid reasons. It is just because of the modern machinery and techniques that farmers are able to produce best quality agricultural products in less time. Mechanized machinery not only save a farmer’s time but reduce the dependency on work force. Now, a man can do as much work with machinery as hundred men without machines. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides are used now-a-days and these salts provide extra enrichment to the crops and protect them from various diseases. Better crops are grown now as compared to the past time crops due to the availability of tube-wells or other latest irrigation systems that were not there in old times.
Answer:
Instructor: “Good morning! I am Inspector from the Department of Agriculture and I came here to discuss your problems and provide you useful knowledge that would be helpful for your profession.”
Farmer: “I want to ask that how can I increase my production?”
Instructor: “Chemical fertilizers are the best solution of your problem.”
Farmer: “But can they help to increase my production?”
Instructor: “Basically these fertilizers are salts, which provide extra nourishment to the crops. In this way, you can get better crops.”
Farmer: “That’s great! Can you tell me any other significant benefit of using these fertilizers?”
Instructor: “These fertilizers not only provide salts to the land but also help you to grow crops that are out of season.”
Farmer: “I have one problem to discuss.”
Instructor: “What is it?”
Farmer: “It’s just a matter of hard luck that last year my whole crop was destroyed by insects. What cure can you suggest for that?”
Instructor: “It’s very simple dear. You can use pesticides or simply insecticides for your crops. Actually these kill the insects and prevent destruction of crops.”
Farmer: “It’s very easy to use. Thank you for providing me such useful information and resolving my problems.”
