EMS Topical Activity Group

Mathematical Modelling in Life Sciences

Mission

The goal of the EMS-TAG on Mathematical Modelling in Life Sciences (EMS-TAG-MLS) is to promote collaborative research in Mathematical Modelling for the Life Sciences in Europe, providing an interactive environment in those areas of research related to the development and application of mathematical models and computational methods for life science problems.  The topics of interest of this activity group include mathematical modelling with both deterministic and stochastic models, analysis of ordinary and partial differential equations, numerical methods for solving direct and inverse problems, data science and artificial intelligence.

Mathematical Modelling in Life Sciences

Mathematical models play an important role in almost every area of biology and medicine. They open new possibilities to understand complex processes, simulate extreme scenarios, react quickly in emergency situations such as global pandemics, and to explore new smart technologies. Clearly, Mathematics in the Life Sciences is a continuously growing topic. It has already featured the application of mathematical modelling, analysis, optimization and simulation in diverse and important life sciences challenges and attracts a large number of researchers. Nevertheless, many more complex questions remain open. It is important to note that there is a growing trend in collaboration between mathematicians, computational biologists, bioengineers and other life scientists. This demonstrates that the life sciences are in great need for quantitative techniques to support research findings, and that this is facilitated through interactions with mathematicians.
