EMS Topical Activity Group on Inverse Problems
Inverse problems generally speaking are concerned with determining causes for desired or observed effects and have numerous important applications from medical imaging via geophysical prospection to nondestructive testing.
Besides being essential in many applications, inverse problems are an overarching mathematical theme covering a broad range of areas from geometric, harmonic and PDE analysis
via statistics and stochastics to numerics and optimization.
European research groups are playing a leading role in this field.
The main goals of this Topical Activity Group on Inverse Problems of the European Mathematical Society are therefore:
to form a European umbrella for the many ongoing activities in inverse problems, involving existing (more or less national) societies such as the Finnish Inverse Problems Society and the German Speaking Inverse Problems Society
to support early career researchers by providing a systematic and easily accessible forum for training and networking;
to foster international cooperations and formation of consortia applying for, e.g., ERC grants;
to make the field more visible to
people from other mathematical subdisciplines, who would be interested in applying their recent findings for enabling better results on relevant inverse problems;
people from non-mathematical disciplines working in inverse problems applications and needing mathematical expertise and methodology.
