Briefing and Logging

The IIMARCH format is a template used by Excel EMS for briefings:

Logging is essential and should be comprehensive

Logging is essential to facilitate operational debriefs, provide evidence for inquiries and identify lessons for the future. It can be used to support a person, role or organisation but alternatively it has the ability to condemn, so logging of all decisions and their rationale should be documented.

A full set of logging instructions are available in the official logs but to summarise:

• Logs need to be clear, intelligible, accurate and written in black ink.
• All decisions and actions need to be recorded; note only facts, not assumptions
• Note the dates, use a 24 hour clock for times and make entries in chronological order
• Sign off entries at the end of the log
• Do not overwrite; mistakes should have a single line through and be initialled with corrections made clearly.
