Under the CCA the emergency services are classed as Category 1 Responders and have a specific set of responsibilities. Excel EMS needs to plan for, and respond to, a wide range of incidents and emergencies that could affect health and care of patients.
These incidents could be anything from extreme weather conditions, to an outbreak of an infectious disease or a major transport accident. Preparation should include planning, risk assessments, and sharing of information and knowledge with partner agencies.
It is in our interest to plan for major incidents. Planning provides the best response for the public, is a sound investment, makes NWAS resilient to incidents, speeds up recovery, and protects personal and organisational reputation.
The Excel EMS Major Incident Response Plan (MIRP) is available on the intranet. All frontline staff should have a Major Incident and CBRNe awareness
The MIRP is designed to help personnel during a response to a major incident and complies with all the previously mentioned legislation. Action cards detailing specific command roles are available in the MIRP and the pocket guide and should be consulted frequently to enable staff to respond effectively.
The CSCATTT principles are the mainstay of the ambulance service response to major incidents and must be reinforced throughout the command and control process
