  • Birdie is mama to a flock of 6 pups. She was found as a stray, pregnant, starving, and cold, on a Rez in South Dakota. She was saved with the help of LightShine Canine Rescue in mid January. When she was first rescued she escaped from the vehicle while they were trying to transfer her to the vet clinic, and she literally had to be lassoed, like a cow, in order to be caught. She had no idea people were there to help her. Can you imagine how terrified she was?

NO MORE! She quickly realized she was safe, warm, no longer had to search for food, and her babies would have the same as well. She gave birth February 10th, and February 18th she came to my home. When I first met her she was full of trust - she let me pet her AND pick up her babies within minutes of meeting her with no hesitation. How amazing is that? This girl buries her head into my chest for love pets. While she likes to sniff and explore my farm, she comes bounding back, huge smile on her face whenever I call. She is learning hoe to play and is proving to be more on the submissive side in comparison to my alpha-personality dogs.

As a Heeler-aussie mix, she has strong herding instincts and was instantly fascinated by our sheep and herds her puppies around the yard. Yes, she sheds; yes, she can sing when she’s lonely and to alert you when someone comes to the door. But what heeler-aussie doesn’t? She’s worth it. Look at her smile.

She learned “sit” quickly and I have a feeling she will be a phenomenal dog for someone who can help keep her curious and active. She walks on a leash as well without pulling (if not without some weaving back and forth). She is a smart bird.
