As representatives of the Emmy Noether society, we are writing this statement to emphasise our values.
Our society is for women and non-binary students studying mathematics and adjacent subjects. We do not adopt a binary notion of gender and are, and always will be, inclusive of trans women and non-binary students.
The history of mathematics is illustrative of the consequences of marginalisation and segregation. Emmy Noether, the German-born mathematician after whom our society is named, produced the revolutionary result known as ‘Noether’s Theorem’ in the early 20th century. The pervasive misogyny Noether faced throughout her career meant it took over 30 years for the depth of this result to be fully appreciated in mathematics and physics. Her theory is today considered fundamental in theoretical physics.
Countless other examples through history demonstrate how exclusivity and acts of prejudice wound progress.
To us, caring about the evolution of mathematics is synonymous with caring for every individual who wishes to contribute.
