The Emirates Cabin Luggage rules are simple once you know the basics. Economy passengers can carry one bag up to 7 kg, with dimensions of about 55 x 38 x 20 cm, including wheels and handles. Business and First Class travellers can bring two pieces. Choose a lightweight bag, pack liquids in containers of 100 ml or less, and keep valuables within reach. Weigh and measure your bag at home to avoid extra fees at the gate. Always check the official Emirates website before travelling, as policies can change without notice.
What Is Emirates Cabin Luggage?
Emirates cabin luggage, also called hand luggage or carry-on baggage, is the bag you take on board and store in the overhead locker or under the seat in front of you. It stays with you throughout the flight, so it should hold your essentials: travel documents, medication, electronics, valuables and a change of clothes.
Emirates Cabin Luggage Size and Weight Limit
For Economy Class, Emirates allows one piece of cabin baggage with maximum dimensions of roughly 55 cm (height) x 38 cm (width) x 20 cm (depth), and a weight limit of 7 kg (about 15.4 lb). Some 2026 travel guides list the depth as 22 cm, so the safest approach is to pack to the smaller figure and confirm the current limit on emirates.com before you fly.
The size measurements include everything on the outside of the bag: wheels, handles and external pockets. Many travellers measure only the main compartment and are surprised when the bag does not fit the airport sizer, so always measure your bag fully packed. The 7 kg limit is the total for your carry-on and applies to the bag itself, not just its contents. A heavy hard-shell suitcase can use up a large part of your allowance before you pack anything.
If your bag is too big or too heavy, Emirates staff may ask you to move items into your checked baggage or to check the cabin bag, which can mean extra fees depending on your fare.
Cabin Baggage Allowance by Travel Class
Your allowance depends on the cabin you book.
Economy Class: One cabin bag only, up to 7 kg. A laptop bag or handbag does not count as an extra item. It must fit inside your single allowance or be your carry-on itself.
Business Class and First Class: Two pieces of cabin baggage are allowed. Typically this is one briefcase or laptop bag plus one handbag or garment bag. Weight limits for premium cabins can vary, so check the details on your booking confirmation.
Premium Economy: Allowances can differ by route and fare, so confirm your entitlement in the "Manage Booking" section.
Items You Can Carry in Your Emirates Cabin Bag
Besides your main bag, you can usually bring a few additional items on board, including:
A jacket or coat
Duty-free purchases made at the airport
A baby bag or baby food for an infant
A folded stroller or pushchair (check availability at the gate)
Small musical instruments that meet the size and weight limits
For items such as large instruments or special equipment, contact Emirates in advance. You may need to check them in or purchase an extra seat.
Liquids, Gels and Security Rules
Like most airlines, Emirates follows international security regulations. Liquids, gels and aerosols in your cabin luggage must be in containers of 100 ml or less, packed together in a single transparent, resealable plastic bag. Power banks and lithium batteries must travel in your cabin bag, never in checked baggage, and Emirates has additional rules on power bank use on board, so check the latest guidance before you fly. Sharp objects, tools and anything that could be used as a weapon must go in checked baggage.
How to Choose the Best Cabin Bag for Emirates
The right bag makes packing easier. Look for these features:
Lightweight construction. A bag that weighs 2 kg or less leaves you more of your 7 kg limit for belongings.
Correct dimensions. Choose a bag with an external size of 55 x 38 x 20 cm or smaller.
Soft or semi-soft shell. These bags can flex slightly, which helps when the overhead locker is crowded.
Smart organisation. Compartments help you reach your passport, charger and headphones without unpacking everything.
Durability. Strong zips and wheels will last through frequent trips.
What Happens If Your Cabin Bag Is Too Big or Too Heavy?
Emirates staff may check the size and weight of cabin bags at check-in or at the boarding gate. If your bag exceeds the limit, you may be asked to check it into the hold, and fees can apply. This is more stressful at the gate, when you are short on time and options are limited. Preparing ahead is far easier than rearranging your bag in a crowded boarding area.
Cabin Luggage vs Checked Baggage
Your cabin bag is separate from your checked allowance. Emirates uses the weight concept on most routes, which means your checked allowance is based on total kilograms, and the piece concept on routes to and from the Americas and parts of Africa, which is based on the number of bags. Your exact checked allowance depends on your fare, so confirm it before you travel. Use your cabin luggage for what you cannot afford to lose or need during the flight, and put everything else in the hold.
Understanding Emirates cabin luggage rules helps you pack smarter and board with confidence. Remember the essentials: one bag up to 7 kg in Economy, compact dimensions of about 55 x 38 x 20 cm, and a few extra rules on routes from India and Brazil. Because airlines can update their policies, always check the official Emirates website before your trip. With the right bag, a light packing list and a quick weigh-in at home, your journey will start smoothly.
