Emily Diamond

Assistant Professor of Environmental Communication

University of Rhode Island

I am an Assistant Professor of Environmental Communication, jointly appointed in the Harrington School of Communication and Media and the Department of Marine Affairs at the University of Rhode Island. I received a PhD in Environmental Policy from Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment and Sanford School of Public Policy.

My research focuses on climate and environmental communication in coastal areas, and specifically how identities inform and shape individuals' responses to environmental information.  I look at how aspects of individual and group-based identities -- such as recreational, familial, place-based, or ethnic identities -- inform attitudes on environmental issues and climate change policies, and how to incorporate these identities into effective environmental communication. My research has implications for efforts to overcome partisan divisions on environmental policies through framing and communication.

In 2022 I received The University of Rhode Island Early Career Faculty Research and Scholarship Excellence Award in Social Sciences, Arts, and Humanities, and the College of Arts & Sciences Research Excellence Award.
