Dave Sholin from the Gavin Report wrote, "Elton John debuts his resurrected Rocket label with a ballad as compelling as any he's ever recorded. Go directly to the air studio, place in deck, hit play. End of story."[3] Chuck Campbell from Knoxville News Sentinel viewed it as a "plodding single," saying, "This is the formula stuff John's been getting away with for years."[4] British magazine Music Week gave the song four out of five, describing it as "a fab, pompous and brooding 'I believe in love' stomper. Thankfully, he's ditched the frothy pop for a quite majestic song that would no doubt get an approving nod from a certain Freddie Mercury."[5] Music Week editor Alan Jones felt the song "is clearly destined to be massive. The big ballad, cleverly marketed over two CD singles, augers well for his upcoming album Made in England."[6] Paul Moody from NME wrote that the "belting comeback single" "is probably the best thing Elt's come up with since his last career revival in the mid-'80s, being a booming epic not dissimilar in mood to Duran's marvellous 'Ordinary World'."[7] A reviewer from People Magazine described it as "a power ballad that hints at John Lennon during his pop-obsessed Double Fantasy era."[8]

Yes, but they are not expected to continue in that sin! After being forgiven by
Jesus we are told to, "Go and sin no more" Carnal Christians are not living by
the Spirit of the Lord, but by the "flesh"
It's not just a matter of believing in Christ, (since the devil also believes /
knows he's God's son) but as Jesus said, "If you love me, keep my commandments"
Elton may know all *about* Jesus, but not actually have come to know Him
personally.

Yes, but remember that ALL Christians still sin. We don't want
NonChristians to think they have to be perfect to be a Christian. With the
inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Christians sin less and are forgiven. Once
we ask Jesus as Savior, we should want to do things out of love more than
duty. God gives us the love and inspiration for what to do right. God, in
his word, wants us to be cheerful givers. Nothing lasts with duty. Look at
the Berlin Wall. It was not put up with love. Bernie Taupin's words put it
well: "I believe in Love, It's all we got. Everything crumbles sooner or
later but Love, I believe in Love." And, of course, God, in his word, is
Love!We could talk more about this but we don't want to get too much off topic.
We and others can always reply more on Christianity by e-mail or at another
newsgroup.Back to the subject of Elton, you and others have brought up many
interesting points where Elton has been aware of Christianity in different
ways. It will be his decision. I hope, someday, he will annouce his
Christianity like other entertainers, such as Cliff Richards.

The choice of these two songs may seem odd (I wonder if the idea for this particular medley was Elton's or the Boys'—naturally, I suspect the latter) until you realize that "Believe" contains a not-too-subtle dig at those who loudly espouse so-called "family values" in its lines "Fathers and sons make love and guns/Families together kill someone without love—I believe in love." (Bernie Taupin's original lyrics were "Father and son," singular, but Neil changes it to "Fathers and sons," plural, when he sings the line, which I honestly consider an improvement.) And "Song for Guy" was written in memory of a young man who died prematurely—a courier for Elton's Rocket Record Company, killed on the job in a motorcycle accident. The song seemed to take on even greater poignance in the post-AIDS era. It's not surprising, then, that Elton and PSB would find common ground in such a medley.
I believe in love, it's all we gotĀ
Love has no boundaries, costs nothing to touchĀ
War makes money, cancer sleepsĀ
Curled up in my father and that means something to meĀ
Churches and dictators, politics and papersĀ
Everything crumbles sooner or laterĀ
But love, I believe in love
I believe in love, it's all we gotĀ
Love has no boundaries, no borders to crossĀ
Love is simple, hate breedsĀ
Those who think difference is the child of diseaseĀ
Father and son make love and gunsĀ
Families together kill someoneĀ
Without love, I believe in love
Without love I wouldn't believeĀ
In anything that lives and breathesĀ
Without love I'd have no angerĀ
I wouldn't believe in the right to stand hereĀ
Without love I wouldn't believeĀ
I couldn't believe in youĀ
And I wouldn't believe in meĀ
