BSF's are highly dependent on sand quality, and thus I recommended Clear introduce 4 weekly sand quality control tests. I provided a simple spreadsheet that performs the calculations, to simplify the process for managers.
1) Jar Test
Tests if sand is washed enough
(2) Effective Size Test
Size of hole that allows 10% of the sand to pass through, standard measure of size
(3) Uniformity Coefficient Test
Indicates whether there is a large or small range of grain sizes within the sand sample
(4) Silt Test
This is the measure of the silt that can plug the filtration sand and cause turbid water to come out of the biosand filter.
It was interesting to navigate the introduction of new processes with the hierarchical nature of Cambodian culture.
