Noticing is a habit that must be built for us to successfully integrate Conscious Discipline. “It helps us be present and build relationships as we encourage helpfulness in our students and build a School Family culture.”
1. Start by using the child’s name or the pronoun “you.”
2. Describe in detail what the child did that was helpful.
3. Help the child understand how that behavior helped an individual or the entire class.
4. End the description with a tag such as “that was helpful” or “that was thoughtful.”
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!!
Dr Bailey suggests starting by making yourself intentionally notice, and using this phrasing 10 times a day when you find students being helpful. One way to do that is to put 10 rubber bands on one wrist and move them to the other throughout the day until it becomes a habit. Noticing can also be tied to academic feedback and giving students the specific examples of what they did and what the result was can also teach other students how to be helpful at the same time
