After thirty-five years of teaching, I became Professor Emerita of Philosophy at William & Mary in 2021. I was Professor of Philosophy at Santa Clara University before coming to William & Mary in 2009. I now work as a philosopher, researcher, and editor in Albuquerque, NM, where I live with my husband and two cats. I received my Ph.D. from Cornell University.
Scholarship
My scholarship has to do with topics stemming from the philosophy of 18th-century thinker and writer, David Hume, especially from his theory of passions and morality. I authored Hume on the Nature of Morality for Cambridge University Press's Elements Series (2022) and Hume, Passion, and Action (Oxford University Press, 2018). My newest book is the edited volume, Hume's A Treatise of Human Nature: A Critical Guide (Cambridge University Press, 2026). I am also editor of A Companion to Hume (Blackwell, 2008). For more on my publications, see my Research page here or my PhilPapers page.
Current Projects
I am now co-editor with Peter Millican (Oxford University and National University of Singapore) of the new book series of Cambridge Elements on the Philosophy of David Hume. I am also co-editor of the journal Hume Studies, with Mark G. Spencer (Brock University) until mid-2026, when we will have completed a 5-year term. I have forthcoming with Hsueh Qu (NUS) a new article on David Hume in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. I have other essays in progress for forthcoming collections, and I serve on the editorial boards of Journal of the History of Philosophy, Archive für Geschichte der Philosophie, Oxford Studies in Early Modern Philosophy, and Philosophy Compass.
