Taking existing ideas and make them new and fresh
As Shielded Cargo 2 was a group effort we had a day long brainstorming session before starting work on developing, the assignment was to make a Shoot 'm up style game, one in particular I knew and enjoyed a lot was the original Air Attack game:
Taking this as an inspiration point for gameplay while we discussed with the artists we realized we could combine that gameplay with a futuristic low poly cyber style visuals.
We only used Air Attack as a starting point and quickly went away from the game in terms of gameplay. Instead of touch controls where you can move to anywhere in the screen instantly we went for standard WASD controls with spacebar as the fire button, this means the game feels more like an arcade game rather than a mobile game, which the artstyle supports. This also meant positioning became more important, which helped shape the dash ability. Which added some quick thinking strategy into the mix.
