An essential guide for understanding the basics of linear algebra The Student Solutions Manual to accompany Elementary Linear Algebra: Applications Version, 11th Edition offers a helpful guide for an understanding of an elementary treatment of linear algebra that is suitable for a first course for undergraduate students. The aim is to present the fundamentals of linear algebra in the clearest possible way; pedagogy is the main consideration. Calculus is not a prerequisite, but there are clearly labeled exercises and examples (which can be omitted without loss of continuity) for students who have studied calculus. About the Author Howard Anton obtained his B.A. from Lehigh University, his M.A. from the University of Illinois, and his Ph.D. from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, all in mathematics. He worked in the manned space program at Cape Canaveral in the early 1960's. In 1968 he became a research professor of mathematics at Drexel University in Philadelphia, where he taught and did mathematical research for 15 years. In 1983 he left Drexel as a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics to become a full-time writer of mathematical textbooks. There are now more than 150 versions of his books in print, including translations into Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Hebrew, Italian, and Indonesian. He was awarded a Textbook Excellence Award in 1994 by the Textbook Authors Association, and in 2011 that organization awarded his Elementary Linear Algebra text its McGuffey Award.

We will begin with a quick review of elementary linear algebra (chapters 1, 2 and 3) followed by a discussion of polynomials and determinants (chapters 4 and 5). This material will then be put to use in chapters 6, 7, 8 and 9. If time permits we will also study bilinear forms in Chapter 10.

Presumably, you've seen the basic theory of solutions of systems of $m$ equations in $n$ unknowns, possibly in the form of the some theorems about matrices in relation to Gauss elimination. So, take $k+1$ vectors in $S$, say $y_1,\dots, y_{n+1}$. Write each as a linear combination of the vectors $x_1,\dots, x_n$ (by the way, it is not important that these vectors are linearly independent, the result and this suggested proof remain the same without that assumption). Consider the matrix of coefficients and think of it as representing a system of equations. How many equations does it represent? How many unknowns? Now, if the vectors you chose in $S$ were linearly independent, what does that mean about the space of solutions of the system? Which elementary theorem does it this contradict?

I and my colleague will teach an elementary linear algebra next few weeks, but the way our course is planned mostly is by turn teaching. By that I mean, my partner will teach the first 8 weeks of the semester, and I will teach the last 8 weeks. That's how it works here. Tradition you may say.
