1. Summary
Efrd does not read, store, or transmit the content of the sites you visit. It NEVER collects or transmits the sites you visit, URLs, or your browsing history. Your settings are stored only in your browser via chrome.storage.sync (browser.storage.sync on Firefox) — they never go to a server we own. Anonymous usage statistics are opt-in and disabled by default. The only data that ever leaves your browser is what you type into the optional "Report Issue" form, and only when you press Send (see section 4).
2. Permissions the extension requests and why
storage — To save your preferences (font, weight, color, background, sound, etc.) via chrome.storage.sync, so they carry over between your devices.
scripting — Injects the reading styles/content script logic into the active page when your settings change.
tabs — Used to detect the current tab's URL so the popup can show the correct "excluded site" state, and to push updated settings to the active tab immediately after a change. It does not read page content.
webRequest — Only used to inspect the Content-Type response header so Efrd can detect PDF responses and redirect them to Efrd's own PDF viewer. It does not read, log, or modify request or response bodies.
contextMenus — Adds an "Open this PDF with Efrd" entry to the right-click menu, as an alternative to automatic PDF detection.
Host permission (<all_urls>) — Reading tools (bionic bolding, fonts, backgrounds, focus ruler) must be able to apply to the text of whatever page you're currently reading, so the extension needs to be able to run on any site you choose to use it on. This permission is only used to change how a page looks; it is never used to read, store, or transmit page content.
3. What data is NOT collected
The sites/URLs you visit, page content, form data, passwords/session information, your location, or any information that directly identifies you (name, email, etc.) — none of this is collected or transmitted, with the sole exception of what you voluntarily type into the "Report Issue" form described below.
4. "Report Issue" feature (bug reports / feedback)
The popup includes an optional "🐛 Report Issue" button, and the uninstall page offers a similar feedback form. Nothing is sent unless you fill this in and press Send. If you use it, the following is sent to our feedback relay:
The site name/description you typed in
The issue description you typed in
The extension version and your browser's UI language
A screenshot, only if you choose to paste one in — this is entirely optional
This is sent to https://efrdfeedback2.efrd.deno.net, a small relay we run that forwards the message to a private Discord channel so we can read and act on it. The relay does not run any tracking or analytics of its own — it only forwards what you typed. We do not ask for your name or email, but please don't include personal information in your report unless you're comfortable sharing it with us that way.
5. Optional (opt-in) anonymous usage statistics
The "Privacy" section of the settings panel has a toggle that is off by default. If enabled, only aggregate, site-independent counters (such as "bionic reading enabled X times") would be sent in bulk — no information about which site or when you used a feature. As of this writing this feature has no analytics endpoint configured yet, so enabling the toggle currently sends nothing anywhere; this section will be updated if and when that changes. You can turn the toggle off at any time from the same panel.
6. Third-party services
To display certain fonts (Inter for the bionic-reading preview and default styling, DM Sans/DM Mono for the extension's own popup UI), font files are downloaded from Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com, fonts.gstatic.com). As a natural consequence of this standard web request, your browser's IP address reaches Google — this is an inherent part of how Google Fonts works and is not otherwise processed by us. Google's privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
The reading fonts Lexend, Atkinson Hyperlegible Next, and OpenDyslexic are bundled directly in the extension and do not make any external request.
7. Sale or sharing of data
No user data is sold, rented, or shared with third parties for marketing purposes.
8. Data retention and deletion
Your settings are automatically deleted by the browser when you uninstall the extension. If you enabled usage-statistics counters, you can reset them via the "Reset" button in the settings panel or by uninstalling the extension. Report-Issue messages live in our private Discord channel and are deleted on request — contact us at the address below.
9. Children's privacy
Efrd does not knowingly collect data from children under 13. Since the extension does not collect any personal data in the first place (aside from what you choose to type into a bug report), it poses no additional risk in this regard.
10. Changes to this policy
If this policy is updated, the "Last updated" date on this page will change accordingly.
