Welcome to the third annual Energy Efficient High Performance Computing State of the Practice (EE HPC SOP) workshop! This year’s workshop is being held in conjunction with IEEE Cluster 2021. Due to the worldwide situation under COVID-19, the IEEE Cluster2021 Conference in Portland, Oregon will operate with an on-line style. We see this as a unique opportunity to stay true to our community’s ecological responsibility of reducing carbon-footprint and promoting a drive towards a sustainable future.
This year’s workshop includes authors from Japan, Europe, and the United States describing operational practices and emerging technologies for HPC energy and power efficiency. All of the papers embrace a holistic perspective encompassing both the facility and the HPC system, although each paper has a focus on either the facility or the HPC system. The paper topics cover a breadth of topics in this field, ranging from operational practices (such as facility design) to emerging technologies and even software research (such as application-aware optimizations).
The workshop organizers solicited papers across the HPC community that focuses on energy/power-related research. The submitted papers were peer reviewed by a technical committee comprising 40 members. These members have the technical expertise in multiple energy efficiency topics that span the entire HPC system stack. This ensured that each submitted paper was reviewed by at least 5 reviewers with the background that aligned with the theme of the paper. This led to a strong confidence in the decision process. The acceptance rate of this workshop was 70%.
The on-line style workshop will be shorter than a physical one, will rely on pre-published and pre-recorded materials, and will emphasize discussion and interaction among remote globally-distributed attendees.
The EE-HPC-SOP workshop wouldn’t be successful without the paper submissions it received, and it wouldn’t even exist without the efforts of the dedicated program committee. We would like to thank everybody who submitted a paper to this year’s workshop and our review committee for their thoughtful and knowledgeable reviews. Enjoy the workshop!
