New to pre-clinical education? Start by checking out our planning & teaching resources.
Like the modules preceding it, DHN is as much about clinical reasoning and clinicopathologic correlation as it is about gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition. Much of this reasoning is taught in lectures and group discussions and is challenging to acquire by independent study alone. We strongly advise you to attend classes and group sessions.
Although it might seem that instruction on the GI tract should follow a “mouth-to-anus” sequence, the subject matter is presented in carefully organized themes to help you to process the information as a practicing clinician does.
The themes we will explore include oral health, nutrition, malabsorption/maldigestion, inflammatory disorders, gastrointestinal bleeding, acute and chronic liver injury, and gastrointestinal malignancy. You will note that our discussion of malignancy does not occur until the end of the module - as gastrointestinal neoplasia is either causally or clinically associated with many of the themes discussed in the earlier part of the module, this allows you to apply all of your previously gained knowledge to gain a more complete understanding of etiology, pathogenesis, and clinical features of neoplasia. Our diverse instructors include adult and pediatric clinicians, geneticists, pharmacologists, physiologists, biochemists, histopathologists, and others.
Module Features:
