is a character I developed from concept through to a final 3D model. Inspired by Russian folklore, she was designed for 3D animation and features a full facial and body rig. Shape language and visual storytelling is an important part of her character, and I really feel that I have captured her very charming personality and quirky character.
Baba Yaga was my first exploration of 3D character modelling and texturing using Adobe Substance Painter. The project really allowed me to learn and build on my modelling skillset, especially as I had not rigged and weight painted a 3D character before!
This is the Baba Yaga turn around I illustrated for a 3D reference! I’d say that while it does display what the character looks like from all sides, it is clear that a lot of the shapes look geometrically incorrect and don’t line up properly (specifically the 3-quarter view)
Here, my solid drawing skills are at their weakest, and from this project I really did learn a lot moving forward in terms of imagining a character as existing in 3D!
Baba Yaga facial expressions - what are the limitations of her face and character?
(illustrated without hair, as I wanted a clear view of her face)
Original concept pages for Baba Yaga and how I explored the folklore of the Russian cryptid through illustration. I enjoyed showcasing my ability to ideate and build from a story that exists in the world through character concept!
Refining concept, specifically around proportion and scale.
Baba Yaga, had a very complex silhouette. I did some silhouette drawings to try and simplify that, or at the very least, make a silhouette that was recognisably the character.
