The Process
ECT internship placement process
The following process is for those students who wish to do a 3- credit ECT internship in which we will provide support to help you get a placement and also during the internship itself. You may do up to 2 ECT internships.
Finding an internship that matches your career interests, especially when you are new to the field, may seem daunting which is why the ECT program has designed an internship program that includes a hands-on personalized placement process, ongoing support as needed, peer cohort meeting opportunities with other students doing internships and a wide variety of internship placement sites.
Working closely with Chrissy Glaser, our Associate Director of Experiential Learning, you will have an opportunity to be placed into an internship that matches your interests.
Note: if you are looking for options to do internships on your own, without course credit, you can look through Handshake, Indeed or other search engines, or company / organization websites directly- many of which list internships!
Step 1 : INITIATE THE INTERNSHIP PROCESS
If you are interested in doing a 3 credit ECT internship, read through these four steps below to familiarize yourself, then contact Chrissy Glaser, our Associate Director of Experiential Learning (chrissyglaser@nyu.edu) to discuss what placements interest you.
When you meet with Chrissy Glaser, please be prepared to share the following information to start the process:
the internship sites that you are interested in applying for (see step 2 below)
your resume
NOTE: All students are required to complete 1 semester in the program before starting an internship. If you are an international student, please note that for non-NYU internship, you are required to be in the US for two academic semesters before interning. Please read more about CPT requirements here.
Step 2 : FINDING A PLACEMENT SITE
There are two ways to go about finding a 'for credit' internship placement:
Find your own placement site
If you find an internship at an organization you are interested in interning with, apply and wish to have the internship count as credit towards your degree, please notify Maaike Bouwmeester, ECT Internship Coordinator (mb262@nyu.edu) so that she can confirm that the internship meets ECT internship requirements.Work with Chrissy Glaser to find a placement at one of our pre-selected ECT INTERNSHIP LTXD & G4L placement sites
After reviewing the internship sites; send site(s) of interest to Chrissy Glaser (chrissyglaser@nyu.edu), along with your resume. Assuming internship position is still open, Chrissy will send an introductory email to the contact person at the internship site.
The contact person at the internship site will usually reach out to you via email to set up a time to speak with you about the internship. Sometimes there are multiple candidates for the same internship position, so please prepare well for this conversation and be prepared to share what you'd like to get our of the internship experience. This is also a chance for you to ask questions about what the internship will entail.
After this conversation, we recommend that you follow up with the contact person by sending a note of thanks and recapping your interest in the position as well as relevant work, academic or other experiences and skills you could contribute.
ECT INTERNSHIP NOTES:
Internship opportunities will be posted every semester on the ECT slack channel and sent to all graduate students via email. Please try to apply for internships a few months before start of the next semester, ideally no later than the following dates*:
Fall Semester: August 5th
Spring Semester: January 7th

*Application timing notes for your consideration:

When CPT is required, a student cannot begin the internship until after it is approved by OGS.

Please share via Slack #ect_internships channel OR email/DM Maaike & Chrissy (mb262@nyu.edu and chrissyglaser@nyu.edu.
Friday, March 1, 2024
Friday, April 5, 2024
Friday, May 3, 2024
Reflective writing should be at least a page in length, include a description of what you are doing in your internship, incorporating, when possible, images of projects you are working on.
Following are the types of entries you may wish to write about:
What project(s) are you working on? (include its purpose and goals, the audience and setting for which it is being produced, the media and technology or software and applications employed, Who is working on the project, in what positions and with what skills and expertise, and where do you fit in?)
Once the foregoing is established, entries may be updated about the progress of the project over time, the work you do each day, and others' contributions.
What did you learn about your own interests, talents, likes/dislikes?
What about this experience might you want to experience in a future job? What would you avoid?
What did you learn from observing how teams work together on a project? How do managers lead? What could be improved?
How is this work organized and distributed both for individuals and for team collaboration?
What connections and comparisons can you make between what goes on "in the field" and your more academic ECT (and other "classroom") experiences? What is similar and what is different, and how so
Want to add your experience to a portfolio? We recommend you include your reflective writing in your portfolio as a blog post.. More tips and resources on creating portfolios here. See example portfolios here.
Evaluation: & Feedback
At the end of the semester, your internship supervisor will be asked to provide feedback on your internship experience. The evaluation is collected by ECT internship coordinator using an Evaluation form similar to this one. You will also be asked to provide feedback on the quality of the internship experience. This evaluation is used to help you identify strengths and room for improvement.
