Prediction of survival after esophageal cancer surgery

This web calculator was designed by scientists at Karolinska Institutet to estimate the probability of survival after esophageal cancer surgery. This tool was based on a nationwide population-based study in Sweden, and has not been validated in other populations yet.

It is recommended to use this calculator with the help from a physician who can understand the tool. Please do read the text at the bottom to make sure you properly understand the results.

Note: please do NOT include esophageal cancer when calculating the Charlson comorbidity index.

Interpretation of the results:

Survival depends on many different factors. It depends on the patient’s individual condition, features of the cancer, and the treatment. So no one can exactly tell how long a patient will live.

The results show an estimated probability for a patient with the certain combination of the listed factors and do not allow one to say precisely which individual will be alive after certain years. The terms 3-year survival and 5-year survival do not mean that a patient will only live for 3 or 5 years. They relate to, among 100 patients with the same profile, the number of people who are still alive 3 year or 5 years after esophageal cancer surgery. Some people do live longer than 5 years.

More information can be requested from the doctor regarding the patient’s own outlook.
