The Community

A community is a group of people living or working together in the same area. People in communities might go to the same schools, shop in the same stores or do other things together. They also help each other and solve problems together. If it's a big community, the people in it might not always go to the same places, but they might like or believe in the same things.

Kinds of Communities

What kind of communities are you in? Let us start with your family. They are a type of community because they usually live together and do a lot of the same things. Then there are your friends. They share your ideas and probably go to the same school. Your neighborhood is a community. Your settlement is a community on your island. Your island is a community that is part of the Turks and Caicos. What is the biggest community? Probably the universe. We are all part of it.

In a way, bees and ants are a community. They live and work together and solve problems by working together. Many animals live in their own kinds of communities.

Types of Communities

Community - a place where people live, work, or have fun together.

Neighborhood - an area in a community where people live near one another.

Rural - a community with open land, few buildings and businesses and a small population. A lot of agriculture is done in rural communities. Rural communities do not offer many jobs.
Urban - also known as a city or built up area is a community where the population is huge causing it to be overcrowded. There is much infrastructure such as shipping ports, factories, banks, government buildings and sporting facilities. A lot of business takes place in Urban areas. That is why they offer a lot of job opportunities.
Suburban - a residential community outside or on the outskirts of the city where people live in neighborhoods with individual houses or small apartment houses. The population is much greater than in rural areas but not as much as in urban communities.

Vulnerable Groups Within the Community

Individuals are vulnerable when their physical security or health is at-risk.

To be vulnerable means that you are susceptible (prone) to physical or emotional attack or harm.

Such vulnerable groups are:

senior citizens
children
people with disabilities
minorities (poor people)
pregnant women

Some reasons why these groups are considered to be vulnerable are:

inability to protect themselves from others (in terms of age and strength)

lack of support from family and friends

unable to provide basic needs for themselves (money, work, food)

Ways to care for vulnerable groups

join a church group – because of the different committee to assist them

report to social welfare – to get with provision needed

go to salvation army/red cross or any other NGO (non government organisation)

seek assistance from guidance counsellor or local community leaders
