The Caribbean is a region that consists of the Caribbean Sea and more than 700 islands which also includes the Lucayan Archipelago (made up by the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands). The region is southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and the North American mainland, east of Central America, and north of South America.
Caribbean islands are divided into two main groups: The Greater Antilles and the Lesser Antilles. Other island groups include the Bahamian Archipelago and the Netherlands Antilles.
The Greater Antilles are the larger islands group in the Caribbean. Comprising the islands of Cuba, the Cayman Islands, Hispaniola (containing the Dominican Republic and Haiti), Puerto Rico, and Jamaica.
The Lesser Antilles consists the group of islands that form the eastern boundary of the Caribbean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean. Some countries in the Lesser Antilles are St. Lucia, Grenada, Anguilla and Montserrat. Barbados is the most easterly island of the Caribbean.
The Bahamas is comprised of 700 islands and over 2,000 rocks and cays, sprinkled over 100,000 square miles of ocean. It extends 760 miles from the coast of Florida on the north-west almost to Haiti on the south-east. Thirty of the islands are inhabited.
The ABC Islands are to the west of the Lesser Antilles and north of Venezuela. In order alphabetically they are Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao. All three islands are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Activity #1: Draw and complete the table showing the location of the Turks and Caicos Islands – in relation to the neighbouring countries, e.g. The Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
The Turks and Caicos Islands are about 27 miles from Inagua, Bahamas and about 575 south- east from Florida.
